Murray in good shape for Wimbledon glory

Following his first round victory at SW19, Andy Murray looks in good shape to go all of the way in Wimbledon this year.

Of course he faces many tough challenges along the way, but he seems more ready for these than ever before. Both mentally and physically, Andy Murray is at the peak of his powers.

Just look at the way he recovered in the first round after going a set down to Daniel Gimeno-Traver. He cranked up his game and eventually won with ease.

It was so refreshing to see him turn on the style. He used the crowd to his advantage and wowed them during the final two without losing a single game. Murray is one of the leading players in world tennis, Gimeno-Traver is not – it showed.

Possibly the most encouraging aspect of Murray’s response to losing the first set he played in this year’s Championships was that he didn’t panic. An even better sign is that neither did we.

Murray has matured on the tennis court and is far less likely to let his emotions get the better of him. In his early days you would perhaps worry as soon as he goes 1-0 down. Not now. There is plenty of fight in the Scotsman and he now believes in his ability more than ever.

The British public believes in him too. Of course we support Murray in every tournament he competes in, but Wimbledon is on another level. It was great to see him use the crowd to his advantage on Monday without getting carried away.

In a way, the first round result was a perfect way for Murray to kick off his tournament.

An early setback gave him a reality check, proof that the home crowd will be with him when things don’t go his way, while the comeback showed class and ruthlessness without stretching the match to five sets.

Of course the issue with Murray in major tournaments so far during his career hasn’t always been his own game. He has come up against top-class players who have simply been too good for him on the day.

Rafael Nadal defeated him in the semi-final at Wimbledon last year and should everything go to plan, he will be Murray’s opponent at this stage once again.

There are enough improvements to the British No.1’s game and enough occasions where Nadal has looked vulnerable this year to suggest that the outcome can be reversed.

If you look at the momentum that Murray built up in one match, just imagine what he can do if he makes it to the semi-finals. The crowd will be extremely vocal and firmly behind their man who has learned how to use his support to improve his chances.

He also recently admitted that he took inspiration from Northern Ireland’s Rory Mcilroy’s US Open win over the weekend and is now determined to make it an extremely memorable month for British sport.

Everything is in his favour to make this happen. Talent, fitness, mental strength, inspiration and of course unprecedented support.
