The FA Cup with Budweiser
Arsenal v Aston Villa, R4, 16:00
Author: Thomas Rooney 25/01/2012
Arsenal will look to make progress towards their first piece of silverware since 2006 when they take on Aston Villa in the F.A Cup on Sunday.
The Gunners have endured a poor spell recently, culminating in a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United last Sunday to put them on the back foot in the race for a top four spot and Champions League football.
With the league title certainly beyond them for another year and even a top four finish looking like developing into an almighty battle, boss Arsene Wenger may have to settle for a cup run to appease the famished Arsenal faithful.
The 2006 F.A Cup represents their last trophy and Wenger would dearly love to end their barren spell as soon as possible to end talks about the psychological damage it is doing, and they have an excellent chance of doing just that this time round.
Manchester City have already been dumped out in the third round while either Manchester United or Liverpool will exit the competition when they meet in this weekend, but before dreaming of a date at Wembley they must first negotiate their way past a buoyant Aston Villa.
The arrival of Robbie Keane on loan from L.A Galaxy has done wonders to lift spirits around Villa Park, with his spectacular brace against Wolves on his full debut helping Alex McLeish’s side to all three points against their rivals.
That win lifted Villa up to 11th in the league and lifted hopes of a top eight finish this season, and with Keane’s allegiances to Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham, the Irishman will no doubt be desperate to find the back of the net once more.
The two teams last met in December and it was Arsenal who emerged victorious thanks to a late Yossi Benayoun effort, but the Villains had plenty of their own opportunities to win the game and will be confident of doing just that with the Gunners stuttering in the league.
Thierry Henry scored on his return with Arsenal in their third round tie against Leeds to complete the fairytale having secured his loan move from the New York Red Bulls three days before.
The Frenchman looks set to return to action too having shaken off a calf complaint. Mikel Arteta will also return to the fold. Then, there was more good news for Arsenal as their full-back woes look set to ease, with Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna set to train this week.
Looking at a prediction for this one, Villa are on the up and Arsenal have had their struggles, but it is home side that have enough know how to get the job done. The famous ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ could prove true.
