Australia v USA
Australia are the bookmaker’s second favourite to win the Rugby World Cup and have every chance of reaching the final stages despite a surprising defeat to Ireland in their second match.
The tournament started respectively enough for Australia with a 32-6 victory over Italy in a decent opening match. The Australia team started slowly but put in a very strong second half performance to claim a solid win. The Australians scored four tries in a devastating 17-minute period to clinch a very promising victory.
The second game was a totally different story, as those referring to Australian World Cup News will tell you. The Australians were strong favourites to defeat the Ireland but the European team showed immense strength of character to win the game 6-15.
The shock result was built on a fantastic forward display but all the points for Ireland came from the boot with Sexton and O’Gara both scoring two penalties a piece and Sexton adding to his tally with a drop goal. Australia were only able to respond with a couple of penalties from O’Connor and were fortunate not to concede a try when Tommy Bowe was caught just short of the line.
The score line left the Australia team without a bonus point and it appears that the result will leave the Southern hemisphere sides facing each other in the latter stages of the tournament.
The next match for Australia is against the USA and a big performance is expected. The bookmakers are refusing to quote odds for an Australian victory and the USA are priced at 150/1 to claim the victory.
There won’t be much to learn from the match and many of the Australian fans will be looking towards the Ireland game against Russia with little real prospect of an upset.
The Australia team have a habit of fighting back and they will be expected to improve and mount a real challenge to odds-on favourite New Zealand in the battle to win the tournament.
