Born To Sea
Born to Sea impresses with winning Curragh debut
When your half-brother is regarded as possibly the greatest racehorse to have been seen in the last 40 years it is always going to be difficult to live up to expectations, but in making a very impressive winning debut over six furlongs at the Curragh on Saturday in listed company, Sea The Star's younger sibling Born To Sea has already got the racing industry in a frenzy of anticipation as they wonder if he too could be a potential classic winner, writes Elliot Slater.
John Oxx, who so brilliantly handled the racing career of Sea The Stars and placed him to win all six races as a three-year-old, (including the 2000 Guineas, the Derby, the Eclipse, Irish Champion Stakes, Juddmonte International, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe), has been keen not to over-hype the Christopher Tsui-owned two-year-old Born to Sea, the last foal of the late super-mare Urban Sea, by top stallion Invincible Spirit. But in making such a fine start to his career and winning at the first time of asking at no lesser grade than listed company, the youngster has spoken volumes for his potential for the rest of this term and, more importantly, next season. Those following the horse racing odds should bear this in mind.
Sent off the 5/2f in the horse race betting for the Irish Field Blenheim Stakes, Johnny Murtagh's mount settled well at the rear of the field before being produced with his effort a furlong-and-a-half from home. Showing a smart change of gear he sailed by horses rated in the high-90's to win in the manner of a potential star performer. Bookies sat up very quickly and reacted by installing him as a best priced 12/1 second favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas, and a 16/1 joint-favourite (with Aidan O'Brien's Camelot) for the 2012 Derby.
Although I normally don't go overboard on the evidence of just one run, time might prove that those odds could be a touch on the generous side!
