McDowell question's McIlroy's Open hopes
Graeme McDowell believes Rory McIlroy could struggle for focus when he makes his return at next week's Open Championship at Royal St George's.Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie told the press earlier this week that he thinks the Ulsterman might be 'mentally tired' due to people constantly talking about his impressive US Open victory. McDowell has echoed the opinion and believes that the 22-year-old could struggle to concentrate. Those looking at the British Open betting may want to bear this in mind.
McDowell himself won the 2010 US Open and subsequently struggled for form and focus and says in some ways he's relieved his year as a Major Champion is over.
"It's going to be very hard for Rory when he turns up to be concentrating on the Open Championship," McDowell told a press conference. "He'll still be living three or four weeks ago at Congressional."
McDowell is due to take part in this week's Scottish Open at Castle Stuart in Inverness as he continues his preparation for next week's Open Championship at Sandwich. McIlroy though is taking the week off meaning he hasn't played a competitive round of golf since his triumph at Congressional and as well as being mentally tired, he could also suffer from rustiness due to his lack of competitive play.
However, McDowell believes missing this week could be beneficial and in the long run could help the youngster having been though the same scenario himself last year.
"I certainly wasn't ready and if I had to do it all over again perhaps I wouldn't play," he admitted.
"I think I remember talking about champagne swings this time last year. A lot has been made of Rory taking three weeks off, but there's probably two sides to the argument".
