British Open Golf Betting Tips: Why it could be Jason’s Day at the British open

The 140th Open Championships begin this week and understandably, the majority of talk has been centred around US Open Champion Rory McIlroy and World No.1 Luke Donald.

They are two players on top of their game and along with two men that have topped the world rankings in the last few months -Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer – they form the overwhelming favourites for success at Royal St George’s Golf club.

However, there is one man beyond the main group that could be worth backing. He is by no means a rank outsider, but there could be good value for you if you back Australia’s Jason Day for British Open glory.

Day has been in tremendous form in 2011 and only an incredible display from McIlroy prevented him winning the US Open last month. He was runner-up to the Northern Irishman, eight shots adrift of the eventual winner.

However, he produced better rounds than McIlroy on the Saturday and Sunday, showing that on he can turn it on when it counts.

Backing up this claim, it has to be remembered that he was tied for 2nd at the Masters earlier in the year too.

So, that is two majors this year for Day and two finishes in 2nd place. Not bad at all. He can mix it with the best in the business and will back himself to be up there again this week.

The 23-year-old is no nearly man either. He is now a major force in world golf and it is a matter of time before he wins a major tournament. Why not the 2011 British Open?

For those of you that believe in momentum, Day has this in abundance following the golf he has played so far this year. The way his game is progressing points to a massive win too, so he has to be considered as a potential winner.

It will perhaps suit Day that he is under less pressure than his rivals. McIlroy is of course the man everyone is watching and that brings pressure. Donald is the world no.1 – that brings pressure. Westwood is still searching for his first major – no matter what he says, that brings pressure.

Day can simply go about his business as he has done in the last two major tournaments and continue to prove himself as one of the best young golfers around.

So, if you want a bet away from the top few favourites, look no further than Jason Day.

It has been a while since an Australian was celebrating in England, but this could all change come Sunday evening.
