Stars out to shine in Champion Hurdle

Willie Mullins has all but ruled out the possibility of his smart performer Thousand Stars taking on the mighty Big Buck’s over three miles in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March and has strongly indicated that his charge will instead take on his stable companion and defending champion Hurricane Fly in the Stan James Champion Hurdle on the opening day of the showcase four-day fixture, writes Elliot Slater.

With Hurricane Fly yet to be seen this term, (but according to local reports returning to something close to race fitness), Mullins believes that Thousand Stars has a sporting chance of getting very much in the thick of the action in the race for the two-mile hurdling crown having proved himself a Grade 1 performer at the distance already this term in landing the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown in November, beating Oscars Well by five-lengths. Those with Cheltenham Free bets will have been impressed.

The eight-year-old ended last term winning the French Champion Hurdle at Auteuil in June over three-and-a-quarter-miles, and with stamina to burn jockey Ruby Walsh came in for a deal of criticism after the grey was beaten by Unaccompanied last time out over two-miles in the Grade 1 Istabraq Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown over the Christmas period, a race in which the outstanding Irish jockey appeared to ride his mount for a turn of foot against a specialist over the distance and in the end found Thousand Stars unable to quicken in the closing stages in being beaten just a length-and-a-half by Dermot Weld’s high-class mare.

Currently available at odds of up to 20/1 in the Betfair Cheltenham betting odds to win the Champion Hurdle, Thousand Stars’ principal target this term is the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle on April 14, a race run over what many view as his optimum trip of two-and-a-half miles and in which he was beaten just a neck last term by Oscar Whisky.
