Championship Football ~ Preseason Predictions 2009/10
The Championship:
Champions: West Bromwich Albion
Runners up: Sheffield United
Playoffs: Derby County (winners)
Play off Finalists: Ipswich Town, Cardiff City & Middlesbrough
Relegation: Barnsley, Scunthorpe United & Blackpool
I feel that WBA have the players & with the impetus of a new manager will bounce straight back. Wether they will stay up the following season is a rather more difficult question. After losing the playoff final last season I feel that Sheffield United will come runners up. This I feel is the only way they are going to go up rather then through the playoffs because they will never go up through the playoffs until hell freezes over, so this season then to make my prediction look stupid. Being a massive Brian Clough fan is probably allowing my heart to rule my head but I feel that Derby County will get promoted through the playoffs. His Dad would be rather pleased methinks. The doom & gloom around Middlesbrough will continue with defeat in the playoffs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr Southgate was out of job come the end of the season. Ipswich will improve on last season and make the playoffs but it will just be beyond them this time. That would be a shame as Bobby Robson (RIP) would be pleased looking down from his football seat in the sky. I have tipped Cardiff because I think it would be great to have their fans in the Premiership, hopefully it will be like the 80’s again but without the violence. So, complete logic there.
I’m afraid it’s goodbye to Barnsley (who were very close to going down last season), Scunthorpe & Blackpool. Both Scunthorpe & Blackpool are punching above their weight. Blackpool have done well to stay up the last couple of seasons but this season time will catch up with them. Scunthorpe did well to bounce back to the championship after relegation but I still feel they are lacking in several departments both on and off the pitch. Their opening day four nil defeat at Cardiff City did nothing to disprove my opinion.
