Promotion & Relegation ~ Championship 2008/9
The following are my Promotion & Relegation predictions for the forthcoming Championship football season (2008/09).
Explanations these predictions are to be found at the end of this article.
Championship 2008/9:
Champions: Sheffield United 12/1 with bet365
Runners Up: Derby County
Playoffs: Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, Swansea City & Nottingham Forest
(Winners: Birmingham)
Relegated : Doncaster, Barnsley & Sheffield Wednesday
Reasons for the above predictions:
Sheffield United, Derby & Birmingham City: (Promoted)
Sheffield United won one award last season, "The worst managerial appointment of the season award". This cost them at least a playoff place. Due to a great run in they only just missed a playoff place. I expect them to continue the progress they made in the second half of the season and win the title. Derby County Have in Paul jewel a rare commodity, I.e., a manager with a bloody good track record. After a slow start they will pick up and claim that second place ahead of Birmingham city who after changing their manager through the season will achieve what Sheffield united failed to do last season and gain promotion via the playoffs.
Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley & Sheffield Wednesday: (Relegated)
As this is the first time for Doncaster Rovers in my lifetime to have appeared in the 2nd flight of English football it will be a shame to see them go down but I feel they are lacking in player quality not to mention lack of experience at this level. A shame after they have come from the brink of going out of business after a corrupt owner tried to kill them off.
Both Barnsley & Sheffield Wednesday have been relegated in recent years to the third tier and alas history is set to repeat it self. In Sheffield Wednesday’s case this is mainly down to a board who couldn’t organise a kid’s raffle at your local church never mind a large professional football club with a fan base to boot.
