Chelsea v Portsmouth Prediction:
Sunday, 8 January 2012 - The FA Cup
Author: Thomas Rooney 04/01/2012
Chelsea take on Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round on Sunday and as favourites to win the game, there is no way the home side can afford to slip up.
The problems with consistency at Stamford Bridge have been well documented this season. The Blues have lost ground on the top teams far too regularly and this is why they find themselves 11 points adrift of top spot.
This is also why the FA Cup holds extra importance for them this year. With the chances of winning the Premier League title extremely small, they must value all other silverware extremely highly.
The Champions League will take priority, but the FA Cup is the most famous domestic cup competition around and if Andre Villas-Boas is to settle into English football for a few years, he could do a lot worse than lifting the famous trophy in May.
The quest begins, as mentioned, at home to Portsmouth with the home side hoping to get through this one with as few problems as possible. They will want a commanding performance and a comfortable win.
The fewer headlines after this one, the better because if they fail to win, the premature knives will be out for the Chelsea boss once again.
Portsmouth will look to capitalise on a more nervous than usual Chelsea side though. They have had a rollercoaster time of it lately of course with financial problems and various owners. They would love to put some of this behind them with a fighting performance on Sunday afternoon.
As for their domestic form, well they are 17th in the Championship at the moment and face a defining few weeks of their season. If they can put a good run together, they could challenge for a play-off spot, while if they falter, avoiding relegation is the main aim.
It is all so tight in the Championship and perhaps a positive result at Stamford Bridge can be the boost Portsmouth need to go on a season defining run.
They are well and truly up against it though with their away form far from convincing this season. They have only won once on the road with just eight goals in 12 away games.
Much may depend on the team Chelsea put out, but with Villas-Boas in need of more and more victories, a strong side is likely and with this in mind, they should have too much for the Championship side.
A 3-1 Chelsea win – during which Portsmouth may even take the lead – seems like a good prediction.
