Dream Alliance ~ Grand National Horse Racing betting preview

Dream Alliance

Alliance enjoys his dream moment

The victory of Dream Alliance in the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow during the holiday period was a triumph over adversity for both the winning horse and rider Tom O'Brien, writes Elliot Slater.

Philip Hobbs' eight-year-old gelding will now be aimed at the Grand National at Aintree in April (for which he is currently a best priced 33/1 shot), the same course where his career was thrown into the balance after sustaining an injury in a handicap hurdle at the 2008 fixture.

There were many who thought that the classy son of Bien Bien (second to Denman in the 2007 Hennessey Cognac Gold Cup) might never race again, but after being patiently nursed back to health by the Hobbs team, Dream Alliance showed that he still retains plenty of ability and enthusiasm when running a fine race to be second on his return to action in a Chepstow handicap hurdle in November.

For his part, O'Brien was also returning to action after a lengthy absence caused by him shattering a leg when a horse spooked and lashed out whilst in the parade ring at Hereford in June last year.

Whether the unique test provided by Aintree will ideally suit the Welsh National winner has to be doubtful, as he seems a much better horse when the ground is testing and the world's greatest steeplechase is rarely run on ground easier than 'good to soft'. There also has to be a question mark as to whether (in light of the serious injury he has overcome), he is physically equipped for the daunting Aintree obstacles.

On balance, Dream Alliance is probably one to leave to one side in your ante-post calculations, unless there happens to be a particularly wet spring and the race is run in bog-like conditions.

Whatever else he achieves in his career, Dream Alliance has proved a horse of singular determination and courage and is a credit to all his connections.

Meanwhile, the cold snap has had racing fans looking forward to warmer times, with the odds for the Cheltenham Festival attracting particular attention among pundits.
