Duncan Fletcher

Fletcher named as India coach

Former England coach Duncan Fletcher has been named as the replacement for Gery Kirsten as the new head coach of India.

Kirsten departed after guiding the team to World Cup glory, a tournament which they were favourites for amongst those who place a free bet, last month and after months of speculation, the BCCI opted for Fletcher, who has been given a two year contract.

He is unlikely to take charge of the time for their tour of the West Indies in June, with the tour of England likely to be a more realistic tournament for the Zimbabwean, which will likely attract its fair share of free bets as both side battle it out for the top spot in world cricket. It is believed that Fletcher was recommended by Kirsten for the job, and that some senior players had their say on the appointment.

"After a lot of thought and consultation, the BCCI president and BCCI secretary placed Fletcher's name before the Working Committee, which the Committee ratified," Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI vice-president, said of the appointment.

Fletcher had a successful spell as head coach of England, culminating in victory in the Ashes in 2005, with the 62-year-old receiving credit for helping revive the game in England after a barren spell in the 1990’s. He has also had spells with South Africa as a batting consultant after he left England in 2007 after being on the receiving end of a 5-0 whitewash against Australia.

Fletcher has received the backing of Ali Bacher, who opted against appointing Fletcher to the role of head coach of South Africa when he was part of a panel to help choose the next national coach in 1994, and highlighted some of his qualities, comparing them to his playing abilities.

"Hardworking, disciplined, very professionally driven and played to his utmost potential even if he was not blessed with extraordinary talent," he said. “He brings the same characteristics to his coaching."
