Friendly International: England - Mexico: (Monday, May 24th 8pm, Wembley Stadium):
The Wembley pitch must be saying to itself, “Oh no not another game”. England are now playing Mexico in the first of their pre world Cup warm up games. England won their last game 3-1 against Egypt after coming from 1-0 down at half time to win. Mexico have won their last three games & are unbeaten in their last 5 but they played weak teams so the unbeaten run doesn’t count for much in my opinion. England last played Mexico in a friendly eight years ago at Derby’s Pride park Stadium & won easily 4-0. The only competitive game between the two sides was in the 1966 world cup when England ran out 2-0 winners. It will be interesting to see what side the manager puts out as he will probably not play his full strength 11 as he will want to try some players before he announces his full squad before heading off for South Africa.
In terms of the World cup I don’t believe that England can win the Cup unless they have some luck. In my lifetime they have always gone when ever they have played a better side, all be it rather unluckily most of the time. The media don’t help with their hype either as it only goes to put pressure on the players & give false expectations to the fans. They will probably try & catch or should I say entrap some poor player into saying something off the record just before the games start. Not much help are the media.
England should win this game against Mexico & with ease, it is just a matter of how many goals they will win by. It is worth noting that Mexico have (again) qualified for the world cup which they always seem to do mainly because of the weak group they always find themselves in due to their geographical location. This doesn’t help them as it means that they by & large play strong sides very often in competitive games, hence why they have gone beyond the quarter finals in a World cup despite hosting it twice.
An England win & the media will over react no matter what the score.
