England v India
Nothing but an England whitewash on the cards
Final Test MatchEngland v India, August 18th - 22nd 4th Test, The Oval
Play starts at 1100 BST
Having gone 3-0 up over India to confirm their place at the top of the test rankings, England are all set for a series whitewash going into the final test at The Oval.
There can surely be no other result. India have been useless throughout the tour so far, England have been fantastic. What suggests this might change? As Michael Vaughan predicted as soon as Zaheer Khan was injured, it’s going to be 4-0 to the hosts.
Let’s bask in the glory of the first three tests for a moment first. England have been breathtaking. Put India’s poor form aside and just consider how good Andrew Strauss men have been. To think this is the same side that were bowled out for 51 in the West Indies is quite remarkable.
Everyone has performed. In the batting line-up, only Strauss and Alistair Cook hadn’t been in the runs going into the last test. You know what happened next. It was great to see Eoin Morgan chipping in with a fluent century too.
Anyway, back to the upcoming test. It was revealed today that James Anderson is an injury doubt, but to be honest, this probably won’t make too much difference to England’s dominance.
Of course, Anderson has been superb and a constant terror for India’s batsman. However, if Graham Onions – who has been called up as cover – has to play, you would expect his swing to cause havoc too. That’s just the way it is going for Team England at the moment.
As for India, why would they lift themselves for this game? They were beaten from the very first day of the very first test. They couldn’t raise their game when the series was up for grabs, or when their status as No.1 was under threat, so why would they turn on the style for a consolation match?
It would actually be more frustrating for them if they do win the fourth test. It will remind them about how poor they have been in the previous three. Regardless though, like already mentioned, not many are expecting anything other than an England victory.
The action gets underway at the Oval on Thursday morning and England are sure to be handed a fantastic ovation in their first match since becoming the highest ranked test nation.
The Oval is always a great venue for test cricket, so hopefully India will contribute to an entertaining test match. Failing that, another England dominated three days will do just fine.
