England v India
England ready to dominate again
Second Test MatchEngland v India, 29th July - 2nd August, Trent Bridge
Play starts at 1100 BST
England were fantastic against India in the first test at Lords. Absolutely fantastic. Of course not every individual had the game they wanted, but as a team, they showed once again why they are set to be No.1 in the world.
India played their part at Lords of course. It was a thrilling five days of cricket and this wouldn’t have been the case if the Indians didn’t have their moments of success.
In particular, the way in which India responded to Zaheer Khan’s injury was admirable.
They showed that they can threaten England’s batting line-up and that in the shape of Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar, they have to players that can lead the attack in the absence of their main strike bowler.
It was England that won the game though and in truth, they were the better side for a large percentage of the five days.
Sure, India had them rattled on day four and the likes of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were resilient with the bat, but in the end, England stormed to victory.
They are fully expected to do so again as well. Zaheer has been ruled out of tomorrow’s second test at Trent Bridge and this is a massive blow to the tourists, even if their second and third seamers did perform well in spells at Lords.
England are quite simply a team on top of their game. If one man doesn’t step up, another will. Andrew Strauss, Alistair Cook and Eoin Morgan were relatively quiet at Lords, but it would be typical of Andy Flower’s men if one of these scored a century in Nottingham.
That’s just the way it has been working. They are a fantastic team and one which, at Lords, looked too good for the best side in the world. What does that tell you?
It tells you that, despite the rankings, England are the world’s best test team right now. They have it all.
On home soil, they are a very hard team to beat and even if India do have their superstars, it is England that have a more balanced team with several individuals that can take the game away from their opponents.
India will of course look to come back fighting. They were perhaps undercooked going into the first test, but they have been in England a while now and should be more than ready for the second match of the series.
However, even if India raise their game, England will aim to do the same and eventually be too good for the visitors when it counts.
