Morgan backs IPL decision
England batsman Eoin Morgan has insisted that he made the right decision to delay his domestic season in order to play in the Indian Premier League.This view has since been backed up by the fact that he has been selected for the England test squad for the first match of the summer, at the expense of Ravi Bopara who opted to stay and fight for a place by scoring runs for Essex.
Those placing free bets note how Morgan was of course helped by a score of 193 against Sri Lanka for the England Lions last week, but he feels that the time he has spent in India also helped his progress as a batsman.
He said: “I felt the progress I made in the month or two out there would exceed the four games I might play in county cricket. My priorities are clear: Test cricket comes first and always has.”
When making his decision on IPL involvement, Morgan knew that it was likely to be a straight battle between he and Bopara to replace the retired Paul Collingwood.
Admitting it was a risk to go, Morgan said: “I knew it was a gamble, I knew that from the start. You have to gamble in order to throw yourself out there and do well. For me it was a hard decision but it was the right one.”
The former Ireland international now has an excellent chance to cement his place in the England test team with three test matches against Sri Lanka followed by the eagerly anticipated contest with India later in the summer.
So far in his test career, Morgan has showed flashes of brilliance, but not quite recreated the consistency he has shown in the shorter forms of the game with an average of 32 in six test matches.
He will want to improve on that this summer, that’s for sure. Given his young age of 24, if he can make a big impact in the coming months, you would happily place a free bet on him being part of England’s test team for many years to come.
Morgan is likely to slot into No.6 in the England batting order, completing a strong top six that includes Alistair Cook, Andrew Strauss, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell.
After stating that test match cricket is why he plays the game, Morgan will be hoping to repay the selectors faith by scoring consistent runs, starting with the first test match at Cardiff this week.
