EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX

Exciting Formula 1 season heads to Valencia

Given the dominance of Sebastian Vettel during the 2011 Formula 1 season, outsiders looking in might conclude that it has been an uneventful and predictable few months of racing.

Anyone who thinks this couldn’t be further from the truth though. The 2011 campaign has been enthralling for the most part with talking point after talking point feeding the needs of Formula 1 fans all over the world.

As we head to Valencia for this weekend’s European Grand Prix, Vettel sits 60 points clear at the top of the driver standings, while his team Red Bull are leading the way in their standings, 69 points ahead of their nearest rivals McLaren.

This doesn’t tell the whole story though. Of course Vettel has been at another level at times and Red Bull clearly have the fastest car, but the battle to match them has been fascinating to watch.

McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton have had their moments of joy. Perhaps that is why us British fans are enjoying the 2011 season so much.

When Hamilton defeated Vettel to secure 1st position at the Chinese Grand Prix, it meant an incredible amount to him and was described as his greatest ever victory.

It was the same with Button in the last race at Canada. He thrilled the watching crowd with an incredible performance in the wet conditions and dramatically took 1st place from Vettel on the last lap.

Like Hamilton in China, this was arguably the 2009 World Champion’s greatest win.

The introduction of the drag reduction system has assisted the entertainment on show. As well as Button’s dramatic win from 21st position at one stage, Red Bull’s Mark Webber managed podium in China after starting 18th on the grid.

We have then seen the emergence of Paul Di Resta, the determination of Michael Schumacher, the podium finishes from Renault drivers against the odds and Ferrari’s ever changing tactics to make themselves more competitive.

There has been plenty going on, that’s for sure.

As we head to Valencia this weekend, a circuit that is famous for its lack of overtaking, we await further drama as this 2011 Formula 1 season unfolds.

Once again Vettel will be the man to beat and possibly unstoppable if he secures pole position, but this won’t stop the likes of Webber, Button, Hamilton and Alonso fighting for a podium finish at the very least.
