Everton v Bolton Prediction:

Wednesday, 4 January 2012, Barclays Premier League: 8pm

Author: Thomas Rooney 03/01/2012

The Premier League fixtures continue to come thick and fast this week as Everton take on Bolton Wanderers at Goodison Park with both teams looking to pick up three points to kick-start their 2012.

Referring to Everton to begin with, it is fair to say that January is a big month for them. Not only is it the month that they have their long awaited game in hand on the teams around them, but they will also be looking to do plenty of business in the transfer market.

This is what David Moyes has been crying out for all season of course. The Toffees have been solid enough – they are 10th as we reach the halfway stage of the campaign – but they want to kick on even further.

To do this, Moyes has made it clear that he needs some funds to bring in new players. Things have started well with the arrival of Landon Donovan on-loan for a couple of months and he will hope this is the first of many new faces.

For now though, Everton’s focus has to be on Bolton. This is a game the home team will see as a must win. The outcome won’t affect their outlook for the season, but if they are to push on in the second half of the campaign, they need to be beating the bottom of the table team.

It would be a great way to end a decent festive period for them too. Since the 20th December, Everton have beaten Swansea and West Brom, while they also managed an away point at Sunderland.

As for Bolton, well it hasn’t been a positive Christmas and New Year. Despite winning a crucial match at Blackburn last month, they still find themselves bottom of the table going into the New Year.

This is because, since the win at Ewood Park, Owen Coyle’s men have lost to Newcastle Untied and only managed a point at home to fellow strugglers Wolves most recently.

Then, to top things off, their star player Gary Cahill is in talks with Chelsea over a possible transfer. So, it could get worse before it gets better for Wanderers.

They can take matters into their own hands though if they can pick up a positive result at Goodison Park. Their away form is much better than their home form after all – they have picked up three of their four wins on the road – so they will have some belief.

At this stage, after such as busy period, it is just crucial that Bolton stay in touch with safety.

As things stand they are four points adrift and this gap cannot get any bigger. If it does, no matter who they sign in January, they have a massive challenge ahead.

Even a point would be a good for Bolton to keep them ticking along, especially when they have Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal to come during January.

They could be good value for a point too. Everton are slight favourites, but it has been a strange week or so in the Premier League and Bolton could continue this trend with a score draw in this one.
