FA Cup Final Prediction ~ Chelsea - Portsmouth

by Doug Martin

FA Cup Final: Chelsea - Portsmouth: (Saturday, May 15th 3pm, Wembley Stadium):

Chelsea won the title as you all know on Sunday by beating hapless Wigan 8-0. This was the 4th time this season in the League that they had beat someone by seven goals. They now face a Portsmouth side who finished bottom by some distance which wasn’t helped by their points deduction. They have only managed 7 League wins all season yet in the Cup they have been a different side beating (in Order) Coventry after a replay, Sunderland, Southampton, Birmingham & Spurs. I have predicted Portsmouth to lose every single FA Cup tie they have played this season & every single time they have proved me wrong. They are the first side since Brighton in 1982 to reach the Cup final having being relegated. Let’s hope that Portsmouth don’t do what Brighton did & lose the Final 4-0 after a replay. It should be pointed out that Brighton drew the first game with Manchester United & would have won the game if Gordon Smith had not missed a great chance late on when he shot straight at United goalkeeper Gary Bailey (remember him?). I think that Portsmouth will lose & lose easily because Chelsea are on such top form. Unlike Portsmouth I have correctly predicted Chelsea winning every single match they have played in the FA Cup this season. They have had a much easier run to the final than Portsmouth having played all their games bar the 4th round at home. They have knocked out Watford (5-0), Preston (2-0), Cardiff City (4-1), Stoke City (2-0) & of course Aston Villa (3-0) in the semi final at Wembley. Chelsea are going for the Double for the first time in their history, they are the cup holders having won the cup last season against Everton 2-1. The previous season in 2008 Portsmouth beat Cardiff 1-0 which was their first FA Cup win since 1939 when they beat Wolves 4-1. As this was the last cup final before the second World War Portsmouth therefore kept the cup for six years as the cup was suspended during the hostilities. Chelsea of course won the cup in 2007 when they beat Manchester United 1-0 which means that this is Chelsea’s third final appearance in four years.

If Portsmouth win on Saturday it will probably be the biggest shock since Sunderland then of the second division beat Champions elect Leeds United 1-0. I think that Chelsea will win & without too much fuss but then again I have predicted Portsmouth to lose every game this season so what do I know?
