Can Watson make the most of Wimbledon wildcard?

British tennis player Heather Watson has been gifted a wild card into the women's tournament at Wimbledon just one day after breaking into the world top 100 for the first time, aged just 19 years and 14 days. She currently stands at No. 93 in the world rankings and her efforts this month have seen her become both the first British woman to qualify for the French Open since Kate Brasher in 1983 – and in beating French wildcard Stephanie Foretz Gacon she also became the first British woman to reach the second round of the French Open since 1994 when Clare Wood managed the feat.

With the rule standing that the world's top 100 automatically qualify for all Grand Slam tournaments, normally her break into that bracket would have come just too late to qualify for the most prestigious tournament in world tennis, but her exploits both this year and in previous seasons – such as 2009 when she won the junior US Open in 2009 – have seen her granted a wild card entry to the competition. Those looking to place a Wimbledon bet will be wondering if she can cause at least one upset.

Watson made her first grand slam appearance at Wimbledon last year after being given a wild card but lost in the first round to Italian Romina Oprandi in three sets – and this year will be looking to build on that achievement, although the Wimbledon tennis betting 2011 suggests things will be tough.

So far this season the Guernsey-born player qualified for the ASB Classic, the Cellular South Cup and the Family Circle Cup before making her mark in Paris last week, and will be looking to continue this fine vein of form at the 2011 Aegon Classic where she yesterday beat South African Chanelle Scheepers, who is currently ranked four places above her, to reach the second round of the AEGON Classic at Edgbaston.

Whether or not Watson will feel that she has a genuine chance of doing damage to any of the big names in the women's game, only she will know, but this recent upturn in results certainly suggests that the state of women's tennis in Great Britain is on the rise. Also qualifying for Wimbledon via wildcards will be Laura Robson, Katie O'Brien, Naomi Broady and Emily Webley-Smith.
