Hussey
Hussey "shocked" after surprise omission
Australia have sprung a huge shock by leaving out Mike Hussey from their 15-man World Cup squad, that despite the batsman closing in on a return to action following his hamstring injury. In a decision that could seriously come back and bite the Aussies on the backside, the selectors have opted to go with Callum Ferguson instead of taking the relatively low risk of taking Hussey, who suffered the injury in the recent one-day series against England. Before his injury it's not ridiculous to say that Hussey was probably the in-form batsman in world cricket and had been the only player to come out of the Ashes disappointment with any credit to his name. While the left-hander would have missed his side's opening World Cup game against Zimbabwe, Hussey had assured the management he would be available from the second or third game but it turns out to no avail. Anyone tracking the latest Cricket World Cup 2011 betting would have been surprised by the move.
It's a bold decision by the Aussie and one which will have many opposition bowlers breathing a sigh of relief. Hussey's ability to save innings single handily has made him one of the best batsmen in the one-day format and his average of nearly 52 shows that. Speaking to Fox Sports after the announcement Hussey made his disappointment known.
He said: "I'm really disappointed and a bit shocked by the news. I tried to push my case forward. I said I would really push (to be fit) by the second game and definitely right by the third game but it's not a risk the selectors wanted to take."
