James Horwill

Alexander expecting big things from Horwill

By William Taylor

Australia prop, Ben Alexander has backed new captain James Horwill, and said he expects big things of him ahead of the World Cup.

Horwill has only just returned to the game recently, having spent a year on the sidelines with a major knee injury.

But Alexander believes he is a leader, and has what it takes to be a successful skipper for the Wallabies in New Zealand and beyond.

He said: “Kevvie is always a follow-me kind of guy. He's always in the game, talking, firing blokes up and leading by example even when he wasn't captain, so expect a big performance from him.”

Horwill is expected to lead his side out at the Suncorp Stadium against New Zealand, where he plays his club rugby, which Alexander says will be an added boost.

The last time the giant lock played at the ground was as he lead his Queensland Reds side to victory in the Super 15.

Alexander added: “It's a pretty special moment for him. First Test as captain in his home state, his home stadium, in front of all his friends and family, and fresh off the last time he played there, which I think was a pretty memorable night for him.”

The game on Saturday is part of Australia's Tri Nations campaign, and they will be hoping to prove they are capable of winning the World Cup by beating favourites, New Zealand.

Meanwhile, in other Australian World Cup News, Fairfax Australia have announced that they will not be seeking accreditation to cover the World Cup in New Zealand.

It is part of a media boycott of the tournament in Australia, with many organisations unhappy with the terms of the accreditation documents set out by the IRB.

They become the second media company to pull out of covering the World Cup after Rupert Murdoch's News Limited.

The whole row is centred around what has been described as 'restrictive' conditions surrounding the accreditation.
