Gold Cup Dream still alive for Irish hope Jessies

The Irish challenge for this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup is looking a little thin at present with only Quito de La Roque having really shown the kind of form that entitles him to consideration for the steeplechasing crown. Jessies Dream however could help bolster the Irish raiding party and is now reported back in training ahead of anticipated return to action in January, writes Elliot Slater.

Trained by Gordon Elliott, Jessies Dream proved himself a smart performer last campaign and had been talked off as the leading Irish hope for the Gold Cup until meeting with a training setback earlier in the autumn. Back in full work now, hopes are high that the Presenting gelding will be able to pick up this season where he left off last and go on to give Long Run, Kauto Star and the rest of the leading British chasers something to think about. People looking at the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting online should remember this.

After winning at Galway in October 2010 on his first start of the campaign, Elliott’s charge put himself very much at the forefront of Irish calculation when winning the Grade 1 Bar One Racing Drinmore Novices Chase at Fairyhouse last December, beating Realt Dubh by five-lengths. That race probably took more out of him than connections had realised resulting in Jessies Dream being beaten at long odds-on three weeks later in a three-runner affair at Leopardstown, going down by three-quarters-of-a-length to Magnanimity.

Two months later at the Cheltenham Festival the real Jessies Dream was back and very nearly landed the Grade 1 RSA Chase, taking up the running going well at the second last and kicking on, only to be worn down in the last few strides by compatriot Bostons Angel in a truly pulsating finish, losing out by just a neck.

Still available in places at 33/1 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Jessies Dream may just have one outing in the New Year prior to returning to Prestbury Park to take on the very best in the business.
