Lambro impresses despite Naas defeat

The Willie Mullins-trained Lambro lost few friends when going down with all guns blazing to a three-and-a-half-length defeat at the hands of the very promising Flemenstar in the two-mile Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Chase at Naas on Sunday and remains a horse to keep very much on the right side for the rest of this season, writes Elliot Slater.

Competing over an inadequate trip Ruby Walsh’s mount nevertheless was bang alongside the speedy Flemenstar from three out and only gave best half-way up the run to a horse who is a genuine top-class novice two-mile prospect. Connections had possibly wagered that they might get away with the lack of an obvious stamina test with ground at Naas riding very testing indeed, but Lambro did little wrong and remains on course to take his chance at the Cheltenham Festival where either the two-and-half-mile Jewson Novices Chase (for which he is currently quoted at odds of around 25/1), or the three-mile RSA Chase (33/1 offered in places) look realistic propositions. Anyone looking for Cheltenham free bets bookmakers will be keeping an eye on his progress.

A fair novice hurdler last term, the seven-year-old has really come into his own since being switched to the larger obstacles and signalled his intent when winning in Grade 2 company on his fencing bow at Fairyhouse at the end of last season, beating Mackeys Forge by a short-head. A pleasing winner over the useful Shinrock Paddy at Naas in November on his first start this campaign, the gelded son of Milan clearly has speed but also stays very well and appears to handle underfoot conditions ranging from good to heavy.

On the balance of his previous performance it is probable that Mullins will elect to head for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham anticipating decent ground and reckoning that the longer trip is more likely to play to the strengths of his very talented performer.
