League One Promotion

League One Promotion, Relegation battles and the race for a play-off spot

Author: Thomas Rooney 10/11/2011

It may be an international break for English football this weekend, but League One is shaping up nicely and it is worth assessing the promotion and relegation battles at this stage of the campaign.

Things are as tight as ever in the third tier too with just seven points separating Notts County in sixth and Bury in 15th. In fact, it is the race for a play-off spot that looks set to be the most intriguing in League One this year.

Quite simply, anybody from Bury upwards – even some of the teams below them – will know that a good run could see them make a bid for the top six. This is what makes this such a fascinating league.

Nobody is cast adrift at the bottom either. Yeovil Town are bottom, but they are only three points from safety as they join a host of teams with between 10 and 20 points after 17 games of the campaign.

In reality, all of the teams in the relegation zone will harbor ambitions of getting themselves out of it. Of course they need to have a decent run of form in the process, but a couple of victories, even a couple of draws in succession and they could find themselves out of the danger zone.

Continuing the focus on the bottom half of League One for now, it is worth noting that teams more concerned with relegation than anything else right now can pull an unexpected result out of the bag.

Just look at Wycombe’s excellent point at play-off chasing Notts County last time out. They showed excellent fighting spirit to score a 92nd equaliser and along with other teams around them in the league, they will be looking to show more of the same as the season goes on.

At the top, things are a little bit clearer with Charlton Athletic looking like runaway leaders as things stand. After the 5-2 hammering of Preston North End last time out, they are five points clear at the top and a significant seven points clear of 3rd place.

They are therefore in an excellent position to secure an automatic promotion place this year. They need to maintain their focus of course, but with the goals flying in – they have scored 39 goals already this year – they look good for the League One title.

There are some more than capable teams with similar promotion ambitions though. Huddersfield Town – who have done well to hold onto their manager Lee Clark – are 2nd at the moment and in good spirits after an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Then, to spice things up even more, you have the two Sheffield clubs in the play-picture along with MK Dons and Notts County.

All in all, it is set to be a thrilling battle for promotion and relegation in League One.
