Promotion & Relegation ~ League One

The following are my Promotion & Relegation predictions for the forthcoming English football season (2008/09). These predictions cover the English professional divisions,ie, Premiership to Division two as well as the Blue square Premier League.

Explanations these predictions are to be found at the end of this article.

League One 2008/9:

Champions: Leeds united 11/4 with bet365

Runners Up: Leicester City

Playoffs: Hartlepool, Huddersfield Town, Southend United & Bristol Rovers
(Winners: Hartlepool)

Relegated: Hereford United, Leyton Orient, Crewe & Cheltenham Town

Reasons for the above predictions:

League One:

Leeds United, Leicester City & Hartlepool: (Promoted)

Leeds United and their large support will win this division with ease I feel. If they don’t then they will still be moaning about the fifteen point deduction last season which cost them promotion. I still feel it is dreadful that a club and it’s supporters can be penalised for having the nerve to get into financial trouble. Leicester City will be the only side to challenge Leeds on their only visit in their history to this division.

My shock prediction of Hartlepool is based on nothing more than a hunch. Under Danny Wilson they try to play passing football and at least every season one team always comes from nowhere to confound the media (Not that that is hard). This season Hartlepool are going to do a Scunthorpe.

Hereford United, Leyton Orient, Crewe Alex & Cheltenham Town: (Relegated)

Graham Turner did fantastic in getting Hereford promoted last season only two years after finally getting them out of the Conference. He did this on a very tight budget and credit must be given to the board for giving him the time & patience. (isn’t he the board?) This will be the first time they have been in the third tier since the mid 70’s. Good luck to them but I fear they have got promoted above their current means.

Leyton orient had a great first half of the season but fell away badly to finish in mid table. This downward trend will be set to continue and end in relegation for the east Londoners. Crewe have been on a downward trend since relegation from the championship a couple of years ago and added with Dario gradi not being replaced properly I feel they will go down despite trying to play football the right way. A Shame.

Time will also catch up with Cheltenham who have done well to stay up the last couple of seasons.
