LEWIS HAMILTON
However, after a fascinating opening three races, McLaren in particular have made it clear that they can compete with Red Bull. They have also proved that in Lewis Hamilton, they have a driver who can defeat 2010 World Champion Vettel.
Those who watch f1 live would have seen the Englishman secure his first Grand Prix victory of the year in China last time out, with Vettel having secured victories in Australia and Malaysia.
The competitive contest at the top of the team and driver standings will continue throughout the 2011 campaign too, according to BBC Pundit David Coulthard.
The former Formula 1 driver said: “It will be a close season, which is great for the sport. You cannot underestimate anyone, even Ferrari, who are having a difficult start to the season.”
“I think for the good of the sport, we need different people winning. Just like in football, if the same team wins all the time, it's boring.”
This is very much the belief of Formula 1 fans around the world. As much as Vettel can be admired for his ability, it wouldn’t be the best season if he secured victory every week. Just as it wouldn’t be as interesting if Red Bull’s car proved far too fast for the chasing pack.
As things stand, they are very much the team to beat as they sit 20 points ahead of McLaren at the top of the driver standings, but they are not going to completely run away with it. They are not as invincible as many originally thought.
Coulthard’s comments on Ferrari are interesting. They have had a poor start and it would take a lot for them to move up towards Red Bull and McLaren, but it would be very refreshing if Fernando Alonso or Felipe Massa could record a podium finish at the very least at the Turkish Grand Prix.
It would confirm that this Formula 1 season is likely to be highly competitive throughout and possibly become one of the most memorable of all time.
