The FA Cup with Budweiser
Liverpool v Manchester United, R4, 12:45
Author: Thomas Rooney 26/01/2012
Liverpool will try and make it two cup wins in a week as they play hosts to Manchester United in the F.A Cup fourth round on Saturday.
The Reds responded emphatically to the tongue lashing they received from boss Kenny Dalglish following their insipid performance in the 3-1 defeat against Bolton on Saturday, edging Manchester City in the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final to secure a date at Wembley against Cardiff City.
Dalglish in particular berated his side’s lack of passion and desire against City, so the Scot would have been pleased to see his team see off a strong City side thanks to a second half effort from Craig Bellamy that made it 2-2 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.
Now they face the other half of Manchester in the F.A Cup and in the process reignite one of English football’s great rivalries, with plenty of extra spice adding to what already look set to be an engrossing contest.
The pair’s 1-1 draw in the Premier League back in October may have seemed like a fairy drab game judging by the scoreline, but the fallout following that game has had huge ramifications for the English game.
Liverpool forward Luis Suarez received an eight game for repeatedly racially abusing Patrice Evra during the game, with the decision to ban the Uruguayan unsurprisingly proving unpopular with the Liverpool faithful.
With Suarez’s ban hanging heavy over the fixture and adding to the feeling of animosity already felt between both sides, the game should prove to be a feisty encounter.
United secured their path into the 4th round with a 3-2 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and with the Premier League leaders out of the way, Sir Alex Ferguson will know that if they can get past Liverpool, two of their main rivals for the trophy will be out of the competition already.
Having exited the Champions League at the group stage, being knocked out of the Carling Cup by Crystal Palace and sitting behind City in the league table, United will likely be desperate for a long cup run to add to their chances of picking up silverware this season.
Their injury worries show no sign of easing, with Phil Jones and Nani limping off during their 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, while Rio Ferdinand is a doubt, but Anderson and Ashley Young could return to the fold.
Liverpool have no new injury worries going into the game and picked up no new injuries in their game against City, with Jay Spearing still on the sidelines with a hamstring complaint and Lucas Leiva a long term absentee.
Prediction wise, Liverpool could make it a Manchester double for the week and nick the win. They might end up missing out on the Champions League places this season, but in the domestic cups, this could be their year.
