Waley-Cohen free to ride Long Run in Gold Cup

Last year's winning jockey Sam Waley-Cohen was a very relieved man after the BHA declared Long Run's regular pilot will be available to continue his association with the Nicky Henderson-trained Cheltenham Gold Cup winner after confirming that the rider's 15-day suspension for taking the wrong course at Fakenham in December will not include the Cheltenham Festival meeting, writes Elliot Slater.

Waley-Cohen had been extremely concerned that his ban would not be solely restricted to days when amateur rider's races take place and might include regular race days, a move that could very well have meant the public school educated Corinthian being ruled out of attempting to defend his title aboard the horse owned by his father, Robert at the Cheltenham Festival 2012.

The ruling now means that not only will Waley-Cohen be on board the seven-year-old for the blue riband contest (where he will attempt to avenge his two defeats this season at the hands of the extraordinary Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star), but he will also be free to ride the French bred gelding in the key Gold Cup trial, the Grade 2 Betfair Denman Chase at Newbury on February 11. Anyone following the Betfair Cheltenham Gold cup betting will be keeping a close eye on things.

The amateur pilot got himself into the mire when taking the wrong course on his father's Otage De Brion whilst leading in a two-and-three-quarter-mile handicap chase at Fakenham on December 12, an error that caused outrage amongst those who backed the clear leader and prompted the local stewards to take a very dim view of his actions. They refused to accept the rider's claim that he had heard his mount make a loud noise and had taken the horse deliberately onto the wrong course as he attempted to pull him up to avoid any damage to the 10-year-old.

Long Run, having been beaten into second place by Kauto Star when attempting to win a second King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, remains favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 11/4.
