Fish eases through in Wimbledon

World number nine Mardy Fish started his Wimbledon campaign in the vein of form that many expected him to as he swept aside Spaniard Marcel Granollers in straight sets.

However, the win wasn't straightforward with the first two sets having to be settled by tie-breaks. Nevertheless, the expected outcome prevailed and the top-ranked American in the competition has booked his place in the second round at the All England Club.

He played some splendid tennis in the first set, serving 12 aces and winning 13 of 21 points by employing a serve and volley tactic successfully. However, the fact that he only just squeezed through the tie 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 is credit to his opponent who was clearly relishing his chance to shine at the home of grass-court tennis. Those placing a Wimbledon tennis bet 2011 will wonder if he can cause an upset this year.

Having been seeded tenth for the prestigious tournament, many expected a more one-sided affair against the Spaniard who currently sits 38 places below him in the world rankings – but as both these players were taking part in just their first game of the grass-court season, this may be a reason behind the playing field appearing to have been levelled somewhat.

Fish's decision not too warm up for Wimbledon in Halle or at Queen's may not have cost him this time out, but he can be sure of coming up against stronger opposition in the later rounds and would ideally like to have as much court time under his belt as possible as he makes the adjustment from clay to the faster surface of the courts at SW19. Those looking to bet on tennis 2011 will known that grass is probably one of his better services.

Eventually Fish's superior technique and fitness began to show – and were it not for a sliced backhand into the net in the final set – which would have meant yet another break of service – the score line may be been more conclusive.

Fish will now join Rafael Nadal, Gilles Muller, Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet in the second round, and whilst the confident American will certainly not feel any fear at the sound of these names, he will know that he will have to play far better than he did in his first round tie if he wants to progress in the competition.
