Webber: Red Bull will put McLaren “back in their place”

Mark Webber Red Bull driver Mark Webber is relishing resuming the battle for the drivers championship with McLaren’s Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton when the Formula 1 season gets back under way in little under three weeks’ time in Turkey.

Red Bull dominated the early races of the season, with Webber’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel picking up wins in the two opening races of the season. But McLaren have fought back to compete with the Milton Keynes-based team after a disastrous pre-season, culminating in Hamilton winning the Chinese Grand Prix last week in spectacular fashion.

Webber meanwhile has had an adventurous opening three races, where a mixture of bad luck and technical problems, including a repeated failure of his KERS power boost system, has conspired against him to keep him away from the front of the grid.

The Australian displayed his talent in Shanghai however as he battled back impressively from starting in 18th to taking the final podium spot from Button in the final laps of the race, and Webber is insistent that his team can hold off the McLaren charge, if they can sort out their KERS issues.

“It's a key component in F1 this year and Red Bull Racing are not out of the woods with our system yet," the Australian wrote in his Herald Sun column.”

"We didn't run KERS in 2009 and we're playing catch-up to the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, who did.”

"If we can get the system reliable in time for Istanbul, we'll head to the race with confidence. The RB7 is already a great car and we'll be looking to put McLaren back in their place after Lewis Hamilton's victory in China.” He added.

The live formula 1 race in Instanbul, which gets under way on 6th May this year, will not hold particularly fond memories for Webber after a collision with Vettel in last year’s race prompted the German’s famous “crazy” hand gesture towards the 34-year-old, and sparked a series of clashes between the pair over alleged favouritism.
