Masked Marvel slated for Canadian International challenge
When he won the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger with Arctic Cosmos twelve months ago, John Gosden had every intention of sending his charge to tackle the Grade 1 Canadian International at Woodbine but that plan was scrapped when the classic winner sustained an injury. Now, having also won this year's renewal with the tremendously impressive Masked Marvel, Gosden has resurrected the same plan and it seems almost certain that last week's Doncaster hero will head to North America for his next start, writes Elliot Slater.
Gosden has only recently returned from the Keeneland Sales in the US and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly Masked Marvel has recovered from his exertions on Town Moor in a race where he broke the long-standing track record for the distance despite having to race headlong into a strong wind the full length of the half-mile home straight. Those following the horse betting odds would have been very impressed. His defeat of Brown Panther and Sea Moon appears to have been one of the best performances in the final classic of the British Flat season for some years, and with it appearing almost certain that the son of Montjeu will remain in training in 2012 there is plenty to look forward to for the colt's lucky owner, Benny Neilsen. People keeping track of the horse race betting should keep a close eye on him.
Masked Marvel had been installed a warm favourite for next month's Qipco Long Distance Cup on British Champions Day at Ascot on October 15, but his handler has now suggested that the exciting middle-distance performer is expected to fly to Canada to take on the best that country has to offer in the valuable Grade 1 event on October 16. A winner of both Goodwood's Predominate Stakes in May and the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July, (where he beat the smart Census), Masked Marvel promises to be one of the most exercising horses to follow for the 2012 campaign.
