Jacob optimistic Master will stay King George trip

Daryl Jacob is excitedly looking forward to his ride on serious contender Master Minded in the Grade 1 2011 King George VI chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day even though he can’t be sure that the Paul Nicholls-trained horse will last home on his first attempt at three miles, writes Elliot Slater.

Jacob partnered the dual Champion Chase winner for the first time at Ascot last month and the combination immediately clicked as they ran out three-length winners from the smart Somersby in the Grade 2 Amlin 1965 Chase over two-miles-three-furlongs. Already proven at two-and-a-half-miles having ended last season with an impressive nine-length defeat of Albertas Run in the Grade 1 John Smith’s Melling Chase, Jacob feels that Master Minded is relaxed enough in his style of racing to give himself every chance of seeing out the extra half-mile at the Sunbury track.

Confirmation of Jacobs’ big race mount came following the decision of stable jockey Ruby Walsh to partner his long-time superstar partner Kauto Star in the eagerly awaited race that pits the four-time former race winner against last year’s easy victor and subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run. Master Minded is very much the joker in the pack in what is building up to be an outstanding contest, pundits agreeing that if he does stay he could very well give both Kauto Star and Long Run plenty to think about. Anyone looking at a online horse betting site should remember this.

Jacob believes that good ground would be a blessing for his horse as it would give him a better chance of staying what is generally regarded as an easy three-miles, but if the ground is testing than stamina will be at a premium and it is likely that punters will field against the Clive Smith-owned star chaser lasting out the distance in top-class company.

Master Minded is rated a solid 5/1 third favourite for the King George behind market leader Long Run (6/4) and the legendary Kauto Star at 4/1.
