Mon Mome
Three against the Grand National field
www.sportingways.com
Even though Venetia Williams' Mon Mome won the race in tremendous style last year, the fact he was a shock 100/1 winner caused many to view his win as just a flash in the pan. His subsequent performances though have proved he is a serious racehorse and is arguably a better horse this year than last. His most recent effort when a fantastic third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup suggests he is actually well handicapped this Saturday despite running off a 7lb higher mark than last year.
The current odds of 12/1 with Totesport and Extrabet won't last long and I would suggest should be taken as he bids to become the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win back-to-back renewals of the Aintree marathon. If you have a free Grand National bet, back Mon Mome.
Nigel Twiston-Davies has won the race twice before with Earth Summit and Bindaree and has his horses are in tremendous form at present. He has suggested, out of his possible six runners, Irish Raptor could be the one to be on and I agree with him. The winner of last year's Topham Trophy over the Aintree fences has been trained with this race in mind all season and looks a good each-way Grand National bet at 40/1.
My third and final choice is the 2008 runner King John's Castle, trained in Ireland by Arthur Moore. Little has gone right for the 11-year-old grey since he chased home Comply Or Die two years ago, but he is another who has been prepared all season with just this race in mind and his super-shrewd handler is a past master at pulling off big handicap successes. There is a definite chance that King John's Castle could give owner JP McManus his first Grand National victory and the current odds of 40/1 look very tempting.
Slater's National trio: Mon Mome (12/1), Irish Raptor (40/1 e/w) and King John's Castle (40/1 e/w).
