Nadal (1) v Murray (4)
Wimbledon, England
Centre Court (13:00 UK start)
Friday, 1 July 2011
Andy Murray will arguably never have a better chance of securing the Wimbledon title than this year. Of course future tournaments may play into his favour even more, but 2011 is his best chance to date.
This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, the man himself seems more focused than ever. We have discussed this a lot on Sporting Ways over the last week or so, but there is a renewed focus and maturity about Murray’s game.
This was in evidence again against Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals yesterday. The British No.1 secured his second straight sets victory in a row, showing a ruthless streak to his game that is necessary to become a Grand Slam champion.
The second reason Murray has a better chance than ever is the vulnerability of Nadal. Of course he is an incredible force and one who you have to really raise your game to beat, but the prospect of facing him doesn’t seem quite as intimidating as usual for Murray.
The fact is, Murray is more than capable of beating Nadal and the Spaniard knows this is the case. Speaking ahead of the semi-final, the World No.1 said: “The match will be very difficult for me, I think he's playing at a very, very high level.”
Men's Wimbledon Match Cashback
To true Mr Nadal. Murray has coasted to this stage and now Nadal is fearful of him. Again, this is a unique situation with regards to the Scotsman’s Wimbledon career and he should capitalise on it.
The next reason for this possibly being Murray’s year is Nadal’s injury. He has admitted that his foot is ‘not fine’ and although he won’t feel too much pain with some anesthetic, it could affect his game mentally.
The prospect of facing an in-form and focused Murray who will have the full support of the centre court crowd, with an injury, might even be too much for the might of Nadal.
The first set could be crucial. If Murray wins it, we know normality is not being resumed. We have a competitive match on our hands. If Nadal comes out on top, we might start to fear the worst...
Anyway, back to topic and the fourth reason why Murray might never have a better chance of securing the Wimbledon title. Roger Federer – the man who has won this famous tournament six times – was knocked out in the last eight and will not be awaiting the winner of Nadal.
Of course Novak Djokovic or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will are strong opponents, but if Murray can raise his game and get past Nadal, something he is more than capable of doing, this could finally be his year.
