Back United to get back on track

Newcastle v Manchester United Prediction:

Wednesday, 4 January 2012, Barclays Premier League: 8pm

Author: Thomas Rooney 03/01/2012

Newcastle and Manchester United meet on Wednesday evening it what should be a lively and entertaining Premier League clash. After a manic festive period of fixtures, this is another crucial match for both teams.

Looking at Newcastle United to begin with, it is fair to say that they are happy with life going into 2012. Briefly summarising their campaign so far, they started off fantastically, suffered a blip in form and are now aiming to get back on track.

They may have lost their last Premier League fixture – a 3-1 defeat at Liverpool – but the win at Bolton before this was crucial in ensuring that they sit comfortably in 7th as we head into January.

The challenges keep coming for Alan Pardew’s men though and this week’s clash with Manchester United is one of the biggest yet. After a run of games in quick succession, it is set to be tough for a relatively small Newcastle squad to go toe to toe with the Premier League Champions.

However, if there is one thing Pardew’s men have in abundance it is determination to succeed. Backed by a vocal home support, they will give this game everything they have got in a bid to continue the trend of the top two stuttering in recent weeks.

As for Manchester United lost at home to Blackburn last time out in what many consider to be the biggest shock of the season so far. It was widely expected that they would win the game to go top of the table, but Rovers didn’t read the script as they ran out 3-2 winners.

This was the first Premier League defeat of December for them and one they will be desperate to recover from.

The absence of Wayne Rooney for the Blackburn clash – the England striker was dropped after an evening out on Boxing Day – upset the momentum for Ferguson’s men, but he returns against Newcastle and the visitors will be desperate for three points.

They did get away with defeat against Blackburn after all. Manchester City lost too – a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland – meaning it is only goal difference that separates the top two.

Ferguson will want his team to grab the title race by the scruff of the neck and it starts at the Sports Direct Arena on Wednesday evening.

This is something they will do too. It has always been a strength of Manchester United to recover positively from a defeat and with Rooney looking to prove a point, they should pick up a narrow away win at Newcastle.
