Notre Pere
Notre Pere a fascinating Grand National contender
The news that classy Irish chaser Notre Pere may take his chance in the Aintree Grand National adds another fascinating contender to a race bubbling up to be one of the best in years, writes Elliot Slater. The winner of Grade 1 chases at Punchestown and Leopardstwon, as well as the 2008 Welsh Grand National, Jim Dreaper's nine-year-old has just fallen short of the very highest class in recent outings. He finished fifth in Haydock's Betfair Chase and most recently fourth in the Lexus Chase, behind What A Friend.
With his Chepstow victory the gelded son of Kadalko proved he stays well and his potential inclusion in the Aintree marathon gives the Irish an even stronger hand. The presence of War of Attrition, Black Appalachi, Vic Venture and Snowy Morning mean there is already a host of potential winners from the Emerald Isle.
Speaking to reporters Jim Dreaper said:"He will be entered for the John Smith's Grand National. He will have plenty of weight in the race but it is four-and-a-half miles and even if the ground is better than ideal for him, the long distance would help him."
Although he would probably struggle to win off his official mark of 167, Notre Pere still remains a very classy steeplechaser and if given a reasonable racing weight he could give the others something to think about this spring. In the meantime, Dreaper's charge will be kept busy having been pencilled in to run in the Hennessy at Leopardstown this weekend, followed by a possible outing in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in mid-March.
