Novak Djokovic’s win at Wimbledon at the weekend was another indication to tennis fans that the men’s game is in for many more incredible battles at Grand Slam events and other tournaments over the next few years.
In recent times, Roger Federer has had his spell of dominance halted by Rafael Nadal, while the Spaniard appears to have met his nemesis in reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon Champion Djokovic.
This is all where it starts getting interesting though. All three of these players are capable of winning tournaments and they are set to battle it out again and again for our entertainment.
Of course British tennis fans will be hopeful that Andy Murray is involved in this elite group of male tennis players. Well, there is no doubt he can play his part.
He is No.4 in the world for a reason, he just needs that crucial first Grand Slam victory to be able to push on in the same way that Djokovic has done in 2011.
There is then the ever improving duo Mardy Fish and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to consider. They were both excellent at times during Wimbledon and proved they can mix it with the best.
To add an in-form American and big hitting Frenchman to the list of players capable of winning Grand Slam tournaments would be very refreshing for the game. Then if Juan Martin Del Potro can get back to his best another element is added into the mix.
Of course the main competition in men’s tennis is likely to be between the top four players in the world. Djokovic and Nadal are the men to beat at the moment and arguably will be for some time, but Federer and Murray are not far behind.
Other players shouldn’t be intimidated by the likes of these though. Of course they are the elite for a reason, but they should be encouraged by Tsonga’s victory over Federer at Wimbledon.
There isn’t one player for everybody else to fear. Of course Djokovic is the best of the lot at the moment, but Nadal has had a spell at the top recently and will do again, as will Federer.
Djokovic’s rise should then encourage the likes of Murray, Tsonga and Djokovic that if they apply themselves correctly anything can happen. Serbia’s Davis Cup victory was Djokovic’s springboard to the next level and many players are capable of something similar.
There are a certainly exciting times ahead for men’s tennis and with the majority in their mid-20’s, we are set for plenty of epic battles between some extremely talented players.
The US Open is the next Grand Slam tournament this year and it should be an enthralling couple of weeks with a number of potential winners.
