Paul Collingwood

Derbyshire move for Collingwood

Derbyshire have made an audacious attempt to sign Paul Collingwood from Durham.

The North East county are keen to retain Collingwood’s services for next season but are thought to be willing to let the former England international speak to Derbyshire about a possible move.

Derbyshire have issued a 28-day notice period to speak to Collingwood and his agent Neil Fairbrother has hinted the all-rounder could head to Derby next season.

Collingwood, who captained England to the world Twenty20 title in 2010, would be a major coup for new Derbyshire chairman Chris Grant, who promised their supporters and those placing free bets that he would stamp his mark down on the club with a marquee signing for the 2012 season.

The 35-year-old returned to county action after retiring from England duty at the start of the season following a loss of form in the Three Lions successful Ashes campaign.

Collingwood has also lost his place in the England one-day side, with England opting to go for more youthful players, and was replaced quite harshly as t20 captain by Stuart Broad.

Collingwood has had a mixed return to the Durham side, struggling for runs in the Friends Life t20, but has recorded a century in the LV= County Championship against Yorkshire and looked dangerous in his variation with the ball.

If Derbyshire were to secure Collingwood’s signature, he would be playing Division Two cricket and would follow Matthew Hoggard in dropping down a division after retiring from international cricket. You would certainly feel safe placing a free bet on Collingwood scoring plenty of runs.

Meanwhile, Derbyshire have also moved fast to secure the future's of three youngsters as they prepare for the future. Tom Knight, Ross Whiteley and Tom Poynton have been tied down to three-year contracts after breaking into the first-team this season.

Knight, a left-arm spinner, impressed in the 20-over format, especially in front of the Sky cameras, as hit flight and guile deceived the very best batsmen on the county circuit and his eye-catching performances have led to an England under-19 call-up.

Whitley has emerged as an important figure in Derbyshire’s middle order in the shortest format and has starred with a number of cameo innings that have got his side out of trouble. He can also be useful with the ball and has created a real impression on the rest of the squad.

Poynton, a wicket-keeper batsmen, is already an England under-19 international and has graduated through the Derbyshire academy to sign a long-term deal. The 21-year-old is second in line to Luke Sutton, whose experience will benefit Poynton’s development.
