PREMIERSHIP PREDICTIONS
Premiership Predictions for March 9th to 16th March 2010
Best Predicted result(s) of the previous week: “Tottenham drawing at Fulham in the FA Cup & Aston Villa winning away at Reading in the FA Cup as well”
Last weekend was a good one. I correctly predicted three out of four FA Cup results which were Aston Villa winning at Championship Reading, Chelsea beating Stoke City & Spurs drawing at Fulham. I also Correctly Predicted in the Premiership that Arsenal would beat Burnley, Manchester United would beat Wolves away & Everton beating Hull City. This ment that I correctly predicted 6 out of 10 results to improve my Success rate to 55% for the season. A quick note regarding Liverpool losing at Wigan. Ha,ha.
There are two Premiership games tonight (Tuesday), one tomorrow (Wednesday) as well as the weekends fixtures. With the added fixture on Tuesday of Wigan - Aston Villa this gives 14 fixtures for the next week. Good luck.
Match 1: Portsmouth - Birmingham: (Tuesday March 9th 7.45pm):
This is a rematch of Saturday’s FA Cup Quarter final game in which Portsmouth booked their place in the Semi final’s by winning 2-0. Portsmouth will be relegated but their plight is down to really bad direction from a bunch of tossers who have run the club. Portsmouth won their last league game at Burnley 2-1 & so will be hoping to win two games on the trot since last season. Birmingham will be really deflated after their defeat on Saturday as they had won far harder FA Cup ties to get to the Quarter final stage than Portsmouth. Their away form is now beginning to let them down. This reason is why I think that Portsmouth will repeat their victory from Saturday. Too late for them to stay up however.
Result Prediction: A Portsmouth win (again)
Score Prediction: Portsmouth 2 Birmingham 1
Match 2: Sunderland - Bolton: (Tuesday March 9th 7.45pm):
Sunderland are in trouble & need a win from somewhere, anywhere. They have drawn their last few home games but have been losing away (still). They lost at Arsenal last time out away but drew at home with Fulham 0-0 in their last game. They are now only three points away from the drop zone & this is (again)a really important game for them. Bolton had a great win against West Ham away on Saturday on the back of a 1-0 home win against wolves. These two results have dragged them out of the drop zone at West Ham’s expense. Will Bolton manage to get a result in this game? I don’t think they will as Sunderland have to win sooner or later & their home form is still good despite their league position.
Result Prediction: A Sunderland win
Score Prediction: Sunderland 1 Bolton 0
Match 3: Burnley - Stoke: (Wednesday March 10th 7.45pm):
Burnley played well at Arsenal on Saturday & even had the cheek to score a goal &bring the score back to 1-1 early in the second half. Alas, their away form blues continued & they ended up losing 3-1. (as I predicted). In their last home game they lost to Portsmouth 2-1 which was a very bad result considering the season Portsmouth have had. Burnley have only lost twice at home this season, to Wigan & Portsmouth I think they will win this game as Stoke will be gutted at going out of the FA cup to Chelsea on Saturday 2-0. Stoke have had a much better season than last & will end up midtable as I predicted at the start of the season. Stoke lost their last league game 3-1 to Arsenal despite taking an early first half lead. Burnley will this game but I don’t think it will be enough for them to stay up.
Result Prediction: A Burnley win
Score Prediction: Burnley 2 Stoke 0
Match 4: Birmingham - Everton: (Saturday March 13th 3pm):
Birmingham are unbeaten at home for a long time, since around September. Their home form has held up despite their away form going to pot. They proved that with a 1-0 against Wigan in their last home game. As already mentioned they lost at Portsmouth in the FA Cup Quarter finals on Saturday which will be a result that will have bothered them. They now have a severe test of their abilities in this game against an Everton Side that bounced back to form after losing at Spurs to thrash Hull city 5-1 on Sunday. Everton were knocked out of the FA Cup in the forth round at home by Birmingham & will be looking for revenge as a consequence. I think they will win this game & put a dent on Birmingham’s outside chances of qualifying for Europe.
Result Prediction: An Everton win
Score Prediction: Birmingham 1 Everton 2
Match 5: Bolton - Wigan: (Saturday March 13th 3pm):
Bolton have won their last two games prior to the game against Sunderland & whatever the result of that game (played before this review) will still be above the drop zone. They should beat a Wigan side who are having a bad season despite their 1-0 win against Liverpool on Monday night. That was a result that said more about Liverpool’s season than Wigan’s. Never the less it was a very important victory for Wigan & should go a long way to them staying up come the end of the season. In their previous meeting this season the sides battled out a very boring 1-1 draw that did no side any favours. A similar close game methinks but a close victory for Bolton which should go a long way towards Bolton staying up at Burnley’s expense which should bring a smile towards their manager Owen Coyle.
Result Prediction: Bolton to win
Score Prediction: Bolton 2 Wigan 0
Match 6: Burnley - Wolves: (Saturday March 13th: 3pm):
Wolves were a tad unlucky against Manchester United on Saturday in only losing 1-0 to a late Paul Scholes goal. Such is life at the bottom when you are struggling to stay up. Prior to that they lost a massive six pointer 1-0 at Bolton so they really could do with a result in this game. They won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier in the season & a similar result in this game will be very welcome. Burnley should have beaten Stoke as I predicted on Wednesday night but despite that I think Wolves will sneak a result in this game simply because I believe that Burnley are destined to go down while Wolves I Believe will stay up. As I have mentioned many times already this season I think that the Burnley board’s appointment of Brian Laws will prove fatal towards their chances of staying up.
Result Prediction: a Wolves win
Score Prediction: Burnley 0 Wolves 1
Match 7: Chelsea - West Ham: (Saturday March 13th 3pm):
Chelsea bounced back after their surprise defeat to Manchester City by beating Stoke 2-0 in the FA Cup to book a place in the Semi Final’s for the third year running. What Price a hat trick of FA Cup victories? The top of the table is now very tight & Chelsea have been replaced at the top of the table by Manchester United. Arsenal won as well to keep the title race wide open between the three clubs. Chelsea have now lost two league games in recent times & the title race is the better for it. Because of the arrogance of John Terry a lot of neutral fans are rooting for Chelsea to lose. This must play against Chelsea. (I hope). Hopefully their demise will let in Arsenal but The Referees will probably have the last say on that & allow Manchester United to take advantage. West Ham are in the bottom three again after losing a very important relegation fixture at home to Bolton 2-1 on Saturday. I can’t see them winning this game even though they did manage to draw at home with Chelsea earlier in the season.
Result Prediction: A Chelsea win
Score Prediction: Chelsea 3 West Ham 1
Match 8: Hull City - Arsenal: (Saturday March 13th 5.30pm):
Arsenal are still in the title race after they beat Burnley 3-1 last Saturday easier than the scoreline suggests. They are still third but only two points behind Chelsea & behind Manchester United on goal difference only. Arsenal beat Hull 3-0 in early Christmas in the previous fixture & gained revenge last season for their surprise defeat at home to them to beat them 3-1 away at the end of last season. Hull are still in the relegation zone after losing heavily 5-1 at Everton last Sunday. Hull need a win and soon but I’m afraid it won’t be in this game & I can see a similar result to last season’s fixture when the gunners won 3-1. I still think Hull will be relegated mainly because they had the chance to replace Phil brown before Christmas but didn’t.
Result Prediction: Arsenal to win
Score Prediction: Hull 1 Arsenal 3
Match 9: Stoke - Aston Villa: (Saturday March 13th 3pm):
Aston Villa recovered really well from their League Cup final defeat to book a FA Cup Semi Final place by beating Championship side Reading away 4-2 after being behind at half time. They are still in the chase for a forth place finish which I feel will be just a little bit beyond them. That however, will not stop from them from trying right upto the final whistle of the season. Stoke were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday but they can’t really be that upset as they were knocked out away at Chelsea. This followed their home defeat by Arsenal in the League. Last season Stoke won this fixture 3-2 in their first home game back in the top flight since the 1980’s after they had gained promotion the season before. Stoke have improved since last season but so have Villa who have become harder to beat as well. A close game with Villa just shading the game.
Result Prediction: Aston Villa to win
Score Prediction: Stoke 1 Aston Villa 2
Match 10: Spurs - Blackburn: (Saturday March 13th 12.45pm):
Spurs drew at Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday (as I predicted) and will be hopeful of progressing to the semi finals at Wembley in the replay. Aside from that they beat Everton in their last league game 2-1 at home, a result that keeps them in forth place just ahead of Manchester City, Liverpool & Aston Villa. Liverpool are fading & Spurs must be hopeful of finishing forth come the end of the season. They face a Blackburn side who lost their last game 2-1 at Liverpool. Blackburn’s home form is good but away they are well below average, in other words they are crap. Spurs won the return fixture 2-0 at Blackburn in December & will be very confident of a victory in this game. I agree.
Result Prediction: Spurs to win
Score Prediction: Spurs 3 Blackburn 0
Match 11: Manchester United - Fulham: (Sunday March 14th 1.30pm):
Manchester United are now top of the table but only by two points ahead of Chelsea & Arsenal. Let’s hope they don’t win as their points total in terms of bias decisions from the ref’s will have yet again made the difference in their favour. They won their last game 1-0 at Wolves with a late goal. Why do they always have the luck as well? This result followed up their league cup win against Aston Villa. In their last home game they beat West Ham 3-0 (as I predicted) & I can see a similar result in this game. Fulham have had a good season & are still in the FA Cup (a replay at Spurs awaits) & UEFA Cup. They drew 0-0 at Sunderland in their last away game to stop a rot of away defeats but playing away at Sunderland is very different from playing the Ref, err, sorry Manchester United away. A home win.
Result Prediction: Manchester United to win
Score Prediction: Manchester United 3 Fulham 0
Match 12: Sunderland - Manchester City: (Sunday March 14th 4pm):
Manchester City won their last away game & what a victory it was as they inflicted Chelsea’s first home defeat of the season. 4-2 was a pretty important result. It has opened up the title race & boosted Manchester City’s chances of Finishing forth in the table come the final kick of the season. Sunderland are in a relegation struggle which should have been boosted by victory over Bolton in midweek. I don’t however see them winning this game as Manchester City are far too good for Sunderland, this season anyway. Earlier in the season Sunderland lost 4-3 to Manchester City on one of Mark Hughes last games as City Manager. Can’t see a repeat of that scoreline but I can see a city win. More trouble for Sunderland but I still think they will survive come the end of the season.
Result Prediction: Manchester City to win
Score Prediction: Sunderland 1 Manchester City 2
Match 13: Liverpool - Portsmouth: (Monday March 15th 8pm):
Liverpool lost this return fixture 2-0 at Portsmouth just before Christmas. They lost 1-0 at Wigan on Monday to prove that they haven’t really moved on in a positive light since their defeat at Portsmouth. They have now lost 7 times away this season & 9 overall in the league which is bloody funny but not for their legion of part time supporters who can be found down any local pub giving out their arrogant football knowledge when they don’t even attend fixtures. Go figure. They look like they will miss out on 4th place come the end of the season & that is really funny. I think they should keep their manager as he is doing a great job for Football, not Liverpool FC mind. Portsmouth are already down & despite Liverpool’s dreadful season they are still good at home & so I can’t really see anything other than a Liverpool win. Hope I’m incorrect though.
Result Prediction: Liverpool to win
Score Prediction: Liverpool 2 Portsmouth 0
That’s all until next weekends fixtures. Good luck.
