Premiership Predictions
Premiership Predictions & Correct Score Football Tips for the 20th/21st & 23rd February 2010
Best Predicted result of the previous week: “Wigan & Bolton playing out a boring draw just as I predicted”
Hello & welcome again to another chapter in “How to be corrupt & get away with it”, I.E. the Premiership. Last weekend was FA Cup weekend & I correctly predicted that Chelsea would beat Cardiff & that Fulham would beat Notts County. I await the results of the replays between Villa/Crystal Palace, West Brom/Reading, Stoke/Manchester City & Spurs/Bolton as hopefully they will give me more winners in my predictions. In the two midweek Premiership games I was Correct on Wigan drawing with Bolton but a late Manchester City goal for them to draw at Stoke 1-1 denied me a correct result prediction of a Stoke win. I will preview my Champions League predictions in the quarter final preview article as all the ties have not been played or completed yet.
On we go then with another Premiersh*t weekend.
Match 1: Arsenal - Sunderland: (Saturday February 20th 3pm):
Arsenal recovered ground in the Premiership race by beating Liverpool 1-0 in their last League game. Since then they have lost 2-1 at Porto in the Champions League but should (hopefully) go through in the home leg. Arsenal are still third outsiders for the title despite beating Liverpool & this mainly due to their consecutive defeats to Manchester United & Chelsea prior to the Liverpool victory. They are six points behind leaders Chelsea & Five behind second placed Manchester United. The one major thing in Arsenal’s favour is that both clubs above them are dropping points in games they normally wouldn’t do so. Sunderland meanwhile need a league win to arrest their decline as they haven’t won in the league since before Xmas. They have drawn their last three games to help steady the ship but they will be disappointed that they only came away with a draw in their last game away at Portsmouth, especially as Portsmouth drew level with the last kick of the game. A home win to put more pressure on Steve Bruce.
Result Prediction: Arsenal to win
Score Prediction: Arsenal 3 Sunderland 0
Match 2: Everton - Manchester United: (Saturday February 20th 12.45pm):
Everton have slowly improved in the last two months & proved that with victory over Chelsea in their last league game. They followed that up with victory over Sporting Lisbon in their UEFA Cup tie on Tuesday by two goals to one. They could however, regret conceding a late penalty come the end of the second leg. Everton lost easily at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. They will be looking for a reversal of fortune in Saturday’s game & I think they are more than capable of getting a result. Manchester United drew their last league game at Aston Villa 1-1 which has given Arsenal who are below them a glimmer of a chance of catching them & Chelsea. United (there are other United’s in football)had a great win at AC Milan on Tuesday & therefore come into this game full of confidence but they have dropped silly points this season already, hence their defeats at Burnley, Liverpool, Fulham, Aston Villa at home & of course the FA Cup defeat at home to Leeds. A tough game for both sides & hence why I think it will be a draw.
Result Prediction: A score draw
Score Prediction: Everton 1 Manchester United 1
Match 3: Portsmouth - Stoke: (Saturday February 20th 5.30pm):
Portsmouth had a great FA Cup win at local rivals Southampton on Saturday but the 4-1 score line will have flattered them, none the less a good victory. If only they could repeat their FA Cup form in the Premiership. Stoke are also still in the FA Cup after a 1-1 draw at Manchester City. They followed that up with another 1-1 draw against the same opponents on Tuesday in the League. Portsmouth have only won four games all season & I can’t see them making it five against Stoke. Stoke are due an away win in the league having only won the once away this season so far but that admittedly was against high placed Spurs. On the plus side Stoke have drawn six away, including their last away game in the league, a 1-1 draw at Wigan. This then should be a 1-1 draw but I am going to go for a 2-1 win for Stoke. Call it a hunch.
Result Prediction: A Stoke win
Score Prediction: Portsmouth 1 Stoke 2
Match 4: West Ham - Hull City: (Saturday February 20th 3pm):
West ham are just above the relegation places by just the one point. Thankfully their 2-0 win against Birmingham in their last league game has lifted them out of the bottom three but it is so close down there at the bottom that any result either way seems to send a team up or down three to four places. Hull are level on points with West ham but are three places below them. They (Hull) lost at Blackburn 1-0 in their last game but they have picked up the last couple or months or so & are harder to beat than they were at the start of the season when they had some very bad results, Witness the 5-1 defeat at home to spurs in August & then them drawing 0-0 away a few weeks ago as confirmation. Hull’s away form is still letting them down however as they haven’t won away all season. This is the main reason why I think West Ham will win this game.
Result Prediction: A West Ham win
Score Prediction: West Ham 2 Hull City 0
Match 5: Wolves - Chelsea: (Saturday February 20th 3pm):
Chelsea recovered from their defeat at Everton to beat Cardiff easily in the FA Cup 4-1. I wasn’t surprised as I Predicted this result. Chelsea are still top but only by one point from Manchester United. This is a game they should win especially since they beat Wolves easily at home earlier in the season. Can’t see wolves playing a below strength side in this game. Wolves had a great win against Spurs in their last game, a win which lifted them out of the bottom three. Wins against Spurs are vital if they are to stay up. I really can’t see Wolves getting anything from this game despite having a reasonable home record, witness the 0-0 with Liverpool & the victory over Spurs as proof of this. An easy away win for Chelsea & with Manchester United playing a difficult game at Everton they could increase their lead at the top come 5pm.
Result Prediction: A Chelsea away win
Score prediction: Wolves 1 Chelsea 3
Match 6: Aston Villa - Burnley: (Sunday February 21st 2pm):
Villa scored a late goal to draw 2-2 at Crystal Palace on Sunday. This means that they are still fighting on three fronts. The Premiership battle for forth place must be the most important for them but they won’t be upset at playing in the League Cup final or a possible FA Cup final. They have drawn their last two league games, a 0-0 draw at Spurs & a 1-1 draw at home with Manchester United. These were good results for them but they leave them three points adrift of Manchester City in forth place. They now face a Burnley side who to put it bluntly are crap away from home having gained only one point away from 13 attempts. This is relegation form & if it wasn’t for their home form they would already be doomed to relegation. It is not hard for me to predict a home win for Aston Villa, it is just a matter of how many goals they will score.
Result Prediction: a Villa win
Score Prediction: Aston Villa 2 Burnley 0
Match 7: Blackburn - Bolton: (Sunday February 21st 12pm):
Blackburn are almost certain of staying up this season simply because there are far worse sides than them in the League. Bolton are one of them. Bolton had a good draw against Spurs in the FA Cup on Sunday but it is their League position that is of more importance to them. They have yet to win in the League since the appointment of Owen Coyle but gained a valuable point in a 0-0 draw at Wigan on Wednesday night. This now leaves them above Burnley in the table but still in the drop zone. They lost at home to Blackburn earlier in the season which was Blackburn’s first & only away victory in the league so far. Can’t see Bolton getting anything from this game as Blackburn’s home form is Good mainly because they have only lost twice at home this season (Spurs & Manchester City). A home win.
Result Prediction: A Blackburn win
Score Prediction: Blackburn 2 Bolton 1
Match 8: Fulham - Birmingham: (Sunday February 21st 3pm):
Fulham are back on form after a run of away defeats which was then followed by a home defeat to Aston Villa. They recovered from this to beat Portsmouth & Burnley at Home & then a draw at Bolton. They are through to the quarter Finals of the FA Cup after beating Notts County 4-0 at home & are still in the UEFA Cup. They now play a Birmingham side that is also in the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup after coming from behind to beat Championship side Derby County 2-1 away with a very late winner. Birmingham lost their last league game 2-0 at West Ham which means they have now lost two away games in the league on the trot as they lost their three month unbeaten record by losing 3-0 at Chelsea the game before. These two defeats did however sandwich a 2-1 home win over Wolves. Both sides are therefore in form but more so Fulham & as they are at home I am going to go for a home win.
Result Prediction: A Fulham win
Score Prediction: Fulham 2 Birmingham 0
Match 9: Manchester City - Liverpool: (Sunday February 21st 3pm):
Manchester City are still it seems recovering from their League cup defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United. They could only draw at home with mid-table Stoke City in the FA Cup on Saturday & were rather lucky by all accounts to get a draw against the same opponents in a Premiership game on Tuesday. Previously city beat Bolton at Home 2-0 in their last League home game but they lost 2-1 at Hull before the FA Cup game against stoke. Liverpool lost 1-0 at Arsenal last time out in the league which now means that they have lost 6 times away in the league & 8 overall. Not good form & that is why they are 5th in the table & in very real danger of not making a top four finish. Their manager’s tactics have finally come home to roost. City should win this game but it might be close. A narrow home win for City which should go a long way to them finishing above Liverpool come the end of the season.
Result Prediction: A Manchester City Victory
Score Prediction: Manchester City 2 Liverpool 0
Match 10: Wigan - Spurs: (Sunday February 21st 3pm):
Wigan could only draw 0-0 with Bolton on Tuesday night. This was a result that didn’t do them any favours. They are only one point outside the drop zone & in real danger of getting relegated. Their season can basically be summed up in the earlier fixture against Spurs when they were beat 9-1. Wigan have been very inconsistent this season, beating Chelsea one week & then getting beat at Portsmouth 4-0 the next. Spurs don’t really have that problem as they are fighting for a top four finish. Their away form against top ten sides away is what is letting them down as all their away victories have been secured a sides in the bottom half of the table. Therefore they should win this game & to be honest I see no reason to disagree with that prediction.
Result Prediction: A Spurs win
Score Prediction: Wigan 1 Spurs 2
Match 11: Manchester United - West Ham: (Tuesday February 23rd 8pm):
Manchester United should win this game. Their home form is good this season but has been helped by Wolves & others playing reserve sides. Thankfully, Wolves have been fined very lightly (£25,00 suspended) but it is still disgraceful as it is giving Manchester United free points & goals. It will be interesting to see how the title race ends. I wonder if Manchester United are going to pay the fine for Wolves? United have only dropped points to at home to Aston Villa (0-1) & Sunderland (2-2) so far & I can’t see that changing against a West Ham side who are fighting for their lives at the wrong end of the table. West Ham won’t play a reserve side thankfully but their home form is what should keep them up. In their last away game they could only draw at Portsmouth which doesn’t bode well for this game. A home win but at least West Ham will make a fight of it.
Result Prediction: A Manchester United win
Score Prediction: Manchester United 3 West Ham 1
That’s all until next weekends fixtures. Good luck.
