Best Predicted result(s) of the Boxing day fixtures: “West Ham beating Portsmouth” & “Arsenal beating Aston Villa”
Hello everyone after such a short break. Talk about the fixtures coming thick & fast. On Boxing day I correctly guessed five out of ten results right. These were West Ham beating Portsmouth in the relegation battle, Arsenal beating Aston Villa in the top of the table clash, Manchester United beating Hull, Manchester City beating Stoke & Liverpool beating Wolves. This of course keeps my average for the season at the 50% rate for correct results which is better than “Mark Lawerson” at the BBC. Onto to The Bank holiday fixtures & Good luck. See you all in a couple of days for the FA Cup third round previews. Happy new year.
Match 1: Blackburn - Sunderland: (Monday3pm):
Blackburn gained a useful away point at Wigan two days ago. This was a good point for them but two points dropped by Wigan. In their last home game they lost at Home to Spurs in a 2-0 defeat. This was their first home defeat since they lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City on the opening day of the season. Blackburn’s home form is good despite this, while Sunderland’s away form is crap. They have only one once on the road this season & that was at Bolton, again on the opening day of the season. The only other point they have managed on their travels this season was in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. The rest they have lost, though they were rather unlucky to lose at Manchester City 4-3 in their last away game. I think they will get their away form back on track by winning this game.
Result Prediction: A Sunderland away win
Score Prediction: Blackburn 0 Sunderland 2
Match 2: Chelsea - Fulham: (Monday 3pm):
Chelsea dropped more points in their 0-0 draw at in form Birmingham City. With Arsenal beating Aston Villa & Manchester United beating Hull away their lead at the top has been reduced to two points with Arsenal only four points behind them in third. It’s looking like a tight title race. Chelsea have now only won once in five league games. Chelsea need a win to stay on top because if they slip up in this game they could drop from top spot. Fulham their opponents are having a good run, they drew at home with Spurs on Boxing day after they had beat Manchester United 3-0 the game before. I don’t think anybody saw that result coming. This could be a really close game because of the two teams recent form. Chelsea to just shade it.
Result Prediction: Chelsea to win a close game
Score Prediction: Chelsea 2 Fulham 1
Match 3: Everton - Burnley: (Monday 3pm):
Everton got a well deserved point at Sunderland on Boxing day with a late goal to draw 1-1. They are playing well at present without getting any three point wins. This will change in this game methinks as they are playing a Burnley side who can’t win away from home & are slipping down the table due to dropping points at home after a flurry of victories in the first part of the season at Turf Moor. On Boxing day Burnley could only draw with struggling Bolton at Home which was a great chance for them to claim their first three point haul since they beat Hull in October. Everton will be looking for some revenge as they lost 1-0 at Burnley in the first week of the season which was made worse by them missing a penalty. Everton I think are in a false position in the league & that will be proved in this easy home win for them. Result Prediction: Everton to win
Score Prediction: Everton 2 Burnley 0
Match 4: Stoke - Birmingham: (Monday 3pm):
Stoke lost 2-0 at Manchester City on Boxing day (as I predicted). They have now not won in five games, drawing two & losing the other three. They have now dropped a couple of places in the table to 11th. Such is the tightness of the table this season they are only four points off the relegation places. Birmingham meanwhile had a very good draw with Chelsea at home to extend their unbeaten run to ten games. Their last defeat was when they lost at Arsenal 3-1 at the end of October. A very impressive run. They dropped below Liverpool in the table as they managed to leapfrog above them by beating Wolves. I think their run has to end & Stoke will be very keen to end their run. A close game but not as boring as the previous meeting earlier this season which ended 0-0 but Stoke getting the three points.
Result Prediction: Stoke to win
Score Prediction: Stoke 2 Birmingham 1
Match 5: Spurs - West Ham: (Monday 12.45pm):
Spurs got a very good point at Fulham in a 0-0 draw the other day & this keeps them in 5th place in the table. Spurs are now unbeaten in seven of their last eight league games, their only defeat being the surprise 1-0 home defeat to Wolves three matches ago. They have since recovered from that surprise defeat by beating Manchester City 3-0 in their last home game. West Ham meanwhile, had a Good victory against Portsmouth on Boxing day to prevent Portsmouth from putting them bottom of the table. That victory pulled West Ham out of the bottom three as Bolton could only draw at Wigan. West ham haven’t won away since the opening day of the season when they won 2-0 at Wolves. Since then they have managed three draws at Hull, Sunderland & Blackburn. In the return fixture earlier in the season Spurs won 2-1 at West Ham & to be honest I can’t really see an outcome other than a Spurs victory.
Result Prediction: Spurs to win
Score Prediction: Spurs 3 West Ham 1
Match 6: Wolves - Manchester City: (Monday 7.45pm):
Wolves lost 2-0 at Liverpool on Boxing day which was not really a game they were expected to win. It’s the three points against teams such as Burnley in their last home game that they need to avoid relegation. Wolves are now only two points above the relegation places in 15th place. This would be a position they would kill for to be in come the end of the season. Manchester City beat Stoke 2-0 on Boxing day to claim two victories on the trot. In the return fixture early on in the season Manchester City beat wolves 1-0 but the game was not as close as the score line suggests. They will be looking to make that three in this game & I expect them to. It must be pointed out that Manchester City have not won away since the end of August when they won at Portsmouth. Admittedly they have drawn six out of eight of their away games since & of the two defeats one of them was the 4-3 defeat at Manchester United when they were cheated by the ref. The question is weather or not they will regret losing Mark Hughes as manager? Only time will tell.
Result Prediction: Manchester City to win
Score Prediction: Wolves 1 Manchester City 3
Match 7: Aston Villa - Liverpool: (Tuesday 7.45pm):
Liverpool managed to beat Struggling Wolves at home 2-0 on boxing day which means they have now won two home games in succession . The fact they lost 2-0 at Portsmouth in between those two home games takes most of the gloss off this feat. As I have said many times this season Liverpool are having a very bad season. They now only have the FA Cup to play for. Villa meanwhile are having a good season, in fact much better then I thought they would. However, they lost only their forth game of the season in losing 3-0 at Arsenal on Sunday. This was a bad defeat for them. They need to bounce back quickly & this is a good time to play Liverpool as their away form is not very good having lost 5 already. I think Villa will bounce back & win this game & put more misery on Liverpool & point out to them how badly they have fallen in such a short time.
Result Prediction: Aston Villa to win
Score Prediction: Aston Villa 2 Liverpool 0
Match 8: Bolton - Hull: (Tuesday 7.45pm):
Hull lost gain at home to Manchester United on Sunday (as I Predicted). They were a bit unlucky but the fact remains that they are second from bottom & again in relegation trouble after their mini run had pulled them clear. They have now lost three out of their last four. Bolton meanwhile gained a useful point at Burnley in a 1-1 draw on Boxing day. This result means that they are now above Hull in the table. This game without stating the obvious is a right relegation battle & I think that Bolton have the edge on experience to grind out a result. Earlier in the season Hull gained their first win of the season in beating Bolton 1-0. A reverse in fortunes for this fixture.
Result Prediction: Bolton to win
Score Prediction: Bolton 2 Hull 0
Match 9: Portsmouth - Arsenal: (Wednesday 7.45pm):
Arsenal had a great 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday to take them within four points of Chelsea at the top & with a game in hand. Arsenal are not firing on all cylinders but the top two dropping points means that they are right in there with a chance of winning the title. They are now unbeaten in their last five league games, winning four of them but importantly beating Liverpool (away) & Aston Villa in that run. Very important points at this stage of the season. They have only lost four times this season compared to Manchester United’s five games & Chelsea’s three. What is important though is that Chelsea are dropping points by drawing games that they should be winning. Portsmouth beat Liverpool two nil in their last home game to give them only their forth victory of the season. They followed that up with a very bad defeat at West Ham, especially if you consider the league positions of the two teams prior to the game. I think this will be a tough game for Arsenal but they will still edge it.
Result Prediction: Arsenal to win
Score Prediction: Portsmouth 0 Arsenal 2
Match 10: Manchester United - Wigan: (Wednesday 8pm):
Manchester United got back to winning ways by beating Hull City away after they had lost heavily at Fulham 3-0. They needed the win at Hull as they had lost two games out of three prior to that victory. All this means is that they are now only two points behind Chelsea, who themselves have been slipping. Both teams could yet let in Arsenal if they continue like this. Wigan are on the slide having failed to beat Blackburn in a 1-1 draw on Boxing day. This means that they are now two points above the relegation place in 16th place. They have only won once since October. Could this be relegation form? This should then be a an easy home victory for Manchester United on paper & in reality.
Result Prediction: Manchester United to win
Score Prediction: Manchester United 3 Wigan 0
That’s all for a couple of days until the FA Cup third round preview, Have a good new year.
