Premiership Predictions
Premiership fixture Predictions this weekend: 16th May 2009
My last Premiership predictions for the 2nd of May were mixed. I correctly “guessed” that Liverpool and Arsenal would win but got Chelsea and Manchester United incorrect as both won to give me a 50 per cent win rate. Can I or you do better? We will see, so stop talking in the back rows, hold on to your hats & lets go….
1. Bolton - Hull City:
As I predicted Hull City to get relegated at the start of the season I am feeling rather smug at present. Their second half of the season has been dreadful. A shame as they had such a great start to the season. After last night’s win for Newcastle against Middlesbrough they have for the first time this season dropped into the relegation places. This is where they will stay I’m afraid. They will lose this game and will also lose at home to Manchester United the following week at home. I suspect that the manager has lost the dressing room after publicly dressing down his players on the pitch after their first half performance against Manchester city away over Christmas (they were four nil down at the time). Nobody likes being embarrassed and footballers are no different. Bolton are an experienced Premiership side now and despite only drawing 0-0 with Sunderland last weekend I predict that they will beat poor Hull City easily.
Bolton to win 3-1 @ 20/1 with
2. Manchester United - Arsenal:
Arsenal’s
young side will be looking for revenge after being knocked out of Europe by Manchester United but I suspect they will not get their wish. Arsenal’s very bad result & performance against Chelsea last Sunday suggests that two semi final defeats this season has hit them hard. Manchester United on the other hand are closing in on the title despite Liverpool taking them to the wire. If United are going to lose the title, then this is the game that they will mess up in. Sadly, I feel they have the experience and the momentum not to mention the, err, referee’s backing in the run in. sorry Liverpool fans but maybe next season. What you need is a couple of unpleasant American’s in charge who might be able to use their money to your advantage. Oh well, one out of two isn’t bad.3-1 to Manchester United (one of Manchester’s goals a suspect penalty) @ 13/1 with
3. Middlesbrough - Aston Villa:
Sorry to say but Middlesbrough look buggered, especially after their defeat at Newcastle on Monday. A shame, as Gareth Southgate is one of football’s genuine guy’s. They have struggled really badly since around late November & apart from beating Liverpool have not managed much. Aston Villa on the other hand have had a good season and their recent form should not distract from their determined challenge to enter the top four cartel. Their only recent win was the one nil victory over Hull City which says more about Hull’s recent run than Villa’s. As both sides are out of form then I am going to go for a draw, which will do Middlesbrough no favours. They will go down the following week I’m afraid. As for Aston Villa, they will be hoping to build on their progress next season.
A 1-1 draw @ 6/1 with
4. Newcastle - Fulham:
Newcastle’s massive win on Monday night against Middlesbrough was vital. They are now out of the bottom three and to be honest I can’t see either of the clubs below them overtaking them. Fulham have had a great season but I feel that the win against Middlesbrough will have lifted everybody at Newcastle and they will win this game, which will almost certainly keep them up. A pity, as it would have been really interesting to see how Newcastle would have got on in the second tier of English Football. Newcastle versus Doncaster rovers would have been a very interesting fixture, on paper at least.
Newcastle to win 2-0 @ 8/1 with
5. Chelsea - Blackburn Rovers:
I predicted that Chelsea would draw with Fulham a couple of weeks ago & that obviously was proved wrong. After their excellent victory at Arsenal last Sunday I can’t see Blackburn getting anything from Stamford Bridge, especially now that they are safe. Sam Allardyce says that it is his best achievement in football as an manager in keeping Blackburn up in the Premiership. Mind you, this is the same man who said he was going to sue the BBC over their allegations on him taking bungs on transfers, hmm, nothing happened their did it? Chelsea have done well to bounce back from their defeat to the referee, err, I mean Barcelona last week & I expect them to win easily.
Chelsea to win 3-0 @ 8/1 with
6. West Brom - Liverpool:
West Brom have done well in recent games and it is a shame that they have left their good form too late to stay up. Liverpool have done much better than anybody thought (including me) this season & have run Manchester United to the wire. They will win this game, despite a spirited show from West Brom. The funny thing is that I predicted that Liverpool would end up not winning anything this season & I am going to be proved right.
