Premiership Predictions
Predictions for the Premiership last Weekend of the season, 24th May 2009
I correctly guessed that Liverpool would win at WBA as well as Chelsea winning at home to Blackburn. The icing on the cake however, was my correct guessing of the Aston Villa - Middlesbrough Game as well as the correct score. This gave me a 50% success rate. (and you as well if you followed my predictions)
So here goes, last weekend....
1. Arsenal - Stoke City
Stoke City have done really well to stay up this season. I tipped them to go down but they have proved me & a lot of other people wrong. Good luck to them. Arsenal, meanwhile have had a bad season in comparison in the League. They have done reasonably well against the other top teams but it is against the lesser sides that they have dropped too many points. The 2-0 defeat to Hull City being a good example. Now that Stoke City are safe I think they will relax and lose this one. Arsenal are sure of making the Champions league next season by making forth place and so therefore there is nothing for either side to play for other than pride. Stoke’s home form is what has kept them up & I think that their away form will continue on the last day of the season.
2. Aston Villa - Newcastle United
This is the big one in terms of the relegation places. It seems after Fulham’s victory at Newcastle at the weekend that Newcastle are in real danger of going down to the championship. I think they will. Aston Villa are having a bad end of season but they will still have enough to prevent Newcastle from getting a win. As I think that Hull City will get a point against Manchester United (reserves) nothing short of a win at Vila Park will do. They will not get it. The way the club has been run is about to catch up with them big time & there is nothing that Alan Shearer can do about it. I think it will be a frustrating draw for Newcastle. Aston Villa have taken valuable points off Hull City & Middlesbrough in the final weeks of the season but this point against Newcastle added with their point at Middlesbrough will be felt worse at Newcastle.
Aston Villa 1 - 1 Newcastle United @ 6/1 with
3. Hull City - Manchester United
Hull’s unexpected point at Bolton on Saturday took them above Newcastle. I think that Hull city will stay where they are in both the table & therefore the premiership. Manchester United have won the title (again) & because of their Champions league game will field a weakened side. This, coupled with Hull’s desire to stay up (their performance on sat at Bolton was good) will ensure that they get the point they need to stay up as a consequence of Newcastle only drawing at Aston Villa. This will be a massive achievement for Hull after their dreadful second half to the season. Next season for Hull City will be a different story however…
Hull City 2 - 2 Manchester United @ 8/1 with boylesports
4. Sunderland - Chelsea
Sunderland have struggled most of the season but they will stay up and be the North East’s only Premiership next season, which should cheer their long suffering fans up no end. Portsmouth have been poor this season since the departure of Harry Rednap (a loyal bloke) & I can see Sunderland getting a draw their in a dour game to ensure their survival. Expect comments like “the point that was worth Millions of Pounds” in the papers. Chelsea on Sunday will be too much for Sunderland & will win Easily.Sunderland 0 - 2 Chelsea @ 8/1 with boylesports
5. West Ham - Middlesbrough
I’m afraid this is the game where Middlesbrough are relegated. They have simply not been good enough this season, which is a shame. Gone are the days when they attracted some of Europe’s best players. West Ham meanwhile have done well. At one point this season it looked like it would be West Ham going down after a bad run but they have pulled well clear to finish in a mid-table position. The one positive note for Middlesbrough is that their manager will act dignified & their chairman (Steve Gibson) is a good man & runs a stable club, unlike their near neighbours Newcastle. This hopefully will enable them to bounce back up.
West Ham 3-1 Middlesbrough @ 20/1 with
6. Liverpool - Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs are one of only two teams to beat Liverpool this season & I don’t rate their chances of beating them again. Liverpool have had a great season but as I predicted have not won anything. To be honest, the turning point in the title race was the referee’s decision to give Manchester United that penalty when played spurs at old Trafford (the theatre of bad decisions). Who knows what will have happened if Spurs had gone on and won that game? An easy win for Liverpool.
Liverpool 3 - 0 Spurs @ 10/1 with
See you all next season...
