Premiership Predictions & Correct Scores for the weekend of April 17th – 19th 2010

by Doug Martin

Best Predicted result(s) for previous Weekend: “West Ham winning for the first time in 8 games by beating Sunderland” & “Blackburn Holding Manchester United to a draw at home”

Hello everyone. I managed 4 out of 8 for the previous weekend. 3 out of 6 in the premiership & 1 of the FA Cup semi finals. I am amazed that Portsmouth beat Spurs in their FA Cup semi Final but that’s football. I obviously predicted correctly that Chelsea would beat Aston Villa in the other FA Cup semi final & the correct results in the Premiership were West ham beating Sunderland, Blackburn holding Manchester United to a draw & Manchester City beating Birmingham. Chelsea got a helping hand from the ref in the Bolton home game in the week & should have only drawn as Bolton were denied two penalties. It looks like it’s their title now (as I predicted at the start of the season) & it will be interesting to see the point swing at the end in terms of bad decisions as I have rather cockily predicted that Manchester United would come top but that just serves me right for jumping the gun.

Match 1 Birmingham – Hull City: (Saturday April 17th: 3pm)

Birmingham’s bad away form continued as they lost 5-1 at Manchester City last Sunday. At home however it is a very different story. They are unbeaten at home since September when Bolton won 2-1 with a very late goal. Since then they have beaten Sunderland, Blackburn, Wigan, Wolves, West Ham & Fulham. More importantly they have managed to stay unbeaten when they have played the big boys. They have drawn with Chelsea (0-0), Manchester United (1-1), Arsenal (1-1), Liverpool (1-1) , Spurs (1-1) & Manchester City (0-0). They now face a Hull side who have one foot in the Championship after their dreadful 4-1 defeat at home to Burnley. That’s right Burnley who hadn’t won away all season, only picking up one point away. Hull have not managed an away yet & to be honest I can’t see them picking up anything in this game. A home win & another nail in Hull’s coffin.

Result Prediction: Birmingham to win

Score Prediction: Birmingham 2 Hull 0

Match 2: Blackburn - Everton: (Saturday April 17th: 3pm):

Blackburn earned a very good draw against Manchester United last Sunday (as I predicted) & are proving very hard to beat at home this season. They as I have already mentioned previously have only lost twice at home this season, to Spurs & Manchester City. They now face an Everton side who were denied an important victory away at Aston Villa on Wednesday by a very late Villa goal in a 2-2 draw. This now means that both sides are more or less certain to miss out on a 4th place finish. Everton have been on a good run since Christmas but alas their form in the early part of the season has prevented them from taking that much valued 4th place or will as I should say. I think that Everton will just sneak this game as Blackburn are safe from the threat of relegation & Everton won’t stop playing badly now that 4th place looks beyond them. Everton have a good away record this season with wins at Manchester City, West Ham, Portsmouth, Wigan but more importantly have drawn at Aston Villa, Arsenal, Chelsea, Sunderland & Birmingham. All very difficult places to get results. For this reason alone I am predicting an Everton win & therefore Blackburn’s third home defeat of the season.

Result Prediction: An Everton win

Score Prediction: Blackburn 1 Everton 2

Match 3: Fulham - Wolves: (Saturday April 17th: 3pm):

Fulham have had a great season. Not only have they easily stayed away from the relegation zone all season & therefore stayed up but they reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup before being knocked out by Spurs after a replay & have also reached the UEFA Cup semi finals where they will play Hamburg over two legs. There is a of course a real chance that they will meet Liverpool in the final as they are also in the semi’s. Last Sunday Fulham played Liverpool away & gained a very useful point in a 0-0 draw. Their last home game ended in a 2-1 victory over a Wigan side who are still not safe from the threat of relegation. Fulham have had some good home results this season beating both Manchester United (3-0) & Liverpool (3-1) as well as victories against Everton, Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Sunderland, Blackburn, Hull & Burnley. Earlier in the season I correctly predicted Wolves 2-1 win against Fulham so let’s hope that I am correct this time. Wolves are almost safe from relegation & gained a useful point in a 0-0 draw at home to Stoke last Sunday which leaves them still 5 points ahead of Burnley in the last relegation place. A home win but a close game.

Result Prediction: A Fulham win

Score Prediction: Fulham 2 Wolves 1

Match 4: Manchester City - Manchester United: (Saturday April 17th: 12.45pm):

It’s looking like Chelsea’s title now after United could only draw 0-0 at Blackburn last Sunday. For once the decisions went against United when Chelsea beat Bolton 1-0 on Tuesday night. Bolton should have had two penalties which looked handball. The gap is now 5 points. The 2-1 win by Chelsea at Old Trafford is looking very crucial. Despite what some people will think United were not cheated in that game by a offside goal by Chelsea. Yes, it was offside & should not have counted but as United’s goal was handball & Chelsea should have had a penalty it all seems rather pointless to go on about Chelsea’s second goal but then Rupert Murdoch does own 10% of Manchester United so Sky & his papers are going to be impartial aren’t they? The Sun/news of the Screws & the Times were the only papers that were for the Glazier’s takeover of United when they were bidding for the club. Wonder why? Enough of that & on with the game. City are chasing that all important 4th place & with Spurs beating Arsenal on Wednesday night they are neck & neck with city in the fight for that 4th place. City beat Birmingham 5-1 last Sunday but I obviously can’t see a repeat score line in this game. After being knocked out of the League cup by United at the semi final stage & losing to a 97th minute goal at Old Trafford City will be worked up in this game for revenge & I think they will get it.

Result Prediction: A City win

Score Prediction: Manchester City 3 Manchester United 1

Match 5: Stoke - Bolton: (Saturday April 17th: 3pm):

Stoke are safe & have improved their league position on last season as they will almost certainly end up mid-table come the end of the season. Last Sunday they gained a useful point in a 0-0 draw at Wolves. In their previous home game they beat Hull 2-0 easily. Stoke’s home form has been good this season with wins against West Ham, Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley, Fulham, Blackburn & Sunderland. This should be another home victory for Stoke against another relegation threatened side. Bolton were rather unlucky against the ref, err, I mean Chelsea on Tuesday Night but the fact is they lost again. They have now lost four on the bounce but they are still 4 points above the relegation zone. This is mainly due to Hull & Burnley showing such crap form of late. A home win but I think Bolton will stay up despite a defeat in this game.

Match Prediction: Stoke to win

Score Prediction: Stoke 2 Bolton 0

Match 6: Sunderland - Burnley: (Saturday April 17th: 3pm):

Burnley broke their duck at last in winning at Hull 4-1 last weekend. This result won’t I don’t think prevent them going down but it will drag hull down with them. Burnley now face a Sunderland side whose home record has basically kept them up. They beat Spurs more easily than the 3-1 score line would suggest in their last home game. Their home record has included wins against Arsenal, Liverpool, Birmingham & of course Spurs. If only their away record was more better. I still think that Burnley will go down & despite their victory in the “Battle of crap managers” last weekend it is hard to see where their next points are coming from. A shame as Burnley are one of the founder members of the Football League & deserve better. Another away defeat for Burnley.

Match Prediction: Sunderland to win

Score Prediction: Sunderland 3 Burnley 0

Match 7: Spurs - Chelsea: (Saturday April 17th: 5.30pm):

Chelsea with the help of the ref took a giant leap towards their third title under the Russian mafia since they took over. This season will probably be Terry & co’s swansong & to be honest I can see them claiming the double. The title is now in Chelsea’s hands now that United have dropped points at Blackburn & at home to themselves. The defeat to Inter in the Champions League seems to have given Chelsea that extra lift to go on and win the title. As I predicted they beat Aston Villa to reach their third cup final on the trot which I think has not being bettered since Arsenal achieved the same feat in the 1970’s. They now face a tricky game in Spurs away who did their chances of finishing in 4th place a power of good after beating Arsenal for the first time in the league since Edward Heath was prime minister (joking). This could be a really tight game as Spurs have only lost three times at home this season to Wolves, Stoke & Manchester United. A score draw but with Manchester likely to drop points in the Manchester derby I don’t think Chelsea will be too bothered.

Result Prediction: a Draw

Score Prediction: Spurs 1 Chelsea 1

Match 8: Portsmouth – Aston Villa: (Sunday April 18th: 4pm):

Portsmouth are in the FA Cup final after somehow beating Spurs 2-0 after extra time in Sunday’s Semi final at Wembley. I have predicted Portsmouth to go out in every round so far this season & they have defied me & just about everybody else. Well done to them I say & especially their long suffering fans. Back to the League & they gained a good point at Wigan with a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night after drawing again 0-0 at home with Blackburn on Saturday. They are of course relegated but they seem to be going down by playing with a bit of pride. It will be interesting to see how they do next season in the Championship. They are the first side to contest a cup final after being relegated since Brighton in 1984 who lost to Manchester United 4-0 after a 2-2 draw. They now face a Villa side who all but seen their chances of reaching 4th place end after a 2-2 draw at home with Everton. They too have nothing left but pride to play for. Villa have had a good season reaching the League cup final & the FA Cup semi’s. Villa have a good away record this season including victories at Manchester United & Liverpool. I think they will add to their away wins in this game to go with the 4-2 League cup win they achieved here in their last visit earlier in the season.

Result Prediction: An away win for the Villa

Score Prediction: Portsmouth 1 Aston Villa 2

Match 9: Wigan – Arsenal: (Sunday April 18th: 1.30pm):

Wigan could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to bottom club & already relegated Portsmouth on Wednesday night. Their manager said they were showing nerves because of their relegation battle which only leaves the question? How are they going to cope with Arsenal if they can’t deal with lowly Portsmouth? Arsenal’s title hopes disappeared for another season with defeat in the north London derby against Spurs on Wednesday night with a 2-1 loss. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona last week so will end another season without a trophy. They have now not won a major trophy since they beat Manchester United on penalties in the FA Cup final in 2005. Wigan are only five points ahead of Burnley who are third from bottom so they need a win from somewhere but I don’t think it is going to be in this game. An away win for the Arsenal but it won’t be much consolation for them after Wednesday nights defeat at Spurs.

Result Prediction: An away win for the Arsenal

Score Prediction: Wigan 0 Arsenal 3

Match 10: Liverpool – West Ham: (Monday April 19th: 8pm):

Liverpool have had a dreadful season as everyone knows but there is still hope as they are in the UEFA Cup semi finals & could end up playing Fulham in the Final which would be good for English football. Liverpool could only draw at home 0-0 with said Fulham last Sunday which summed up their whole season in that they have just not been good enough. Despite their bad form in the league & the Champions League they have been pretty good at home & have only lost twice at home to Arsenal & Aston Villa. They have inflicted some heavy defeats amongst the so called also rans of the league & that is why I expect them to beat a West Ham side who are slowly inching themselves away from the drop zone. West Ham got a very important victory in beating Sunderland last week to go with a very good 2-2 draw at Everton the Previous week. Will they manage a draw or a victory in this game? I don’t think so but I think they will stay up. A home win.

Result Prediction: A home win

Score Prediction: Liverpool 3 West Ham 0

That’s all for this weekend everybody.

Good luck
