Premiership Predictions & Correct Scores for the 23rd to 24th March 2010
by Doug Martin
Best Predicted result(s) of the previous week: “Manchester United beating Liverpool & Everton beating Bolton”
I correctly predicted five out of ten fixtures for the weekend just gone. The correct predictions were Manchester United & the Referee beating Liverpool, Wigan beating Burnley, Arsenal beating West Ham, Sunderland beating Birmingham & Everton beating Bolton. This gave me a 50% success for the weekend which is just below my average for the season. I was very unlucky in the Portsmouth Hull game as I had predicted Hull to win their first away game of the season but Portsmouth won 3-2 with two very late goals. Such is the life of Football Predicting.

Good luck & see you all on Thursday.
Match 1: West Ham - Wolves: (Tuesday March 23rd 8pm):
West Ham lost again at the weekend even if it was at inform Arsenal. The fact that they played well, missed a penalty & played against 10 men for the entire second half counted for nothing as they came away with no points & no goals either. They are now forth from bottom, three points ahead of Burnley who are in the last relegation place. What has helped West Ham in this bad run for them (They have lost 4 on the trot) has been the equally bad form of the three clubs below them, especially Burnley & Hull. They now face a Wolves side are above them in the table after picking up 4 points from their last 2 away games at Burnley & Aston Villa. A very good haul for them & one which should go a long way towards them staying up. They are above West Ham by just the one point & I think they will swap places come the end of this game which I think will end in a West Ham win.
Result Prediction: West Ham to win
Score Prediction: West Ham 2 Wolves 0

Even though Villa came from 2-0 down to draw with Wolves at home on Saturday they will be disappointed not to have picked up all three points in their quest to come forth at the end of the season. Villa are 7th, 5 points behind Spurs in 4th place but they do have a game in hand, i.e., this game against Sunderland. If Villa win this game they will leapfrog above Liverpool & go equal with Manchester City on points, so it’s all to play for tomorrow night. Sunderland have rediscovered how to win again & beat Birmingham 3-1 on Saturday (as I predicted) to pull further away from the drop zone. Sunderland’s away form is still bad however & because of that I feel that Villa will win reasonably easily & as they won 1-0 at Sunderland earlier in the season will get the league double over them. As Villa also beat Sunderland in the league cup Sunderland will be glad to see the back of the Villa until last season.
Result Prediction: A Villa win
Score Prediction: Aston Villa 3 Sunderland 1

Blackburn got a very useful & well deserved point against Chelsea on Sunday, their first point against one of the top three, Liverpool don’t count anymore as they have been so crap this season. Blackburn’s home form is good as I have pointed out many times before. They have only lost twice all season at home, to Manchester City & Spurs. What is really interesting in terms of the title race is that both Manchester United & Arsenal both have to play away at Blackburn before the end of the season. They now face a Birmingham side who have lost their way a little bit away from home & have only won once away from home in the league since their unbeaten run was ended by Chelsea. They lost at Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday & to be honest I can see a similar result in this game. Whatever the result of this game Birmingham have had a good season, way above expectations. Should be interesting to see how the “Blues” manage next season.
Result Prediction: A Blackburn win
Score Prediction: Blackburn 2 Birmingham 0

Manchester City had a very good result on Sunday by winning at Fulham on Sunday. This result leaves them in 5th place in the table, just 2 points behind Spurs & this their game in hand. Obviously if they win they will go above Spurs into 4th place. This will be a difficult game for City as they face an Everton side who are on a good run. They drew at Birmingham in their last away game but they were 2-0 up at one point. Everton beat in form Bolton on Saturday 2-0. Everton have probably left it too late to claim 4th place come the end of the season but next season could be a different story. Everton have had some good away results this season including draws at both Arsenal & Chelsea. A very close game but I think that City’s home form will prevail (they are unbeaten this season at home). A home win.
Result Prediction: A Home win
Score Prediction: Manchester City 2 Everton 1

Portsmouth pulled of a great victory on Saturday to come from behind to beat fellow relegation “Hopefuls” Hull 3-2 with 2 late goals. This victory won’t be enough for them to stay up but it probably means the end for Hull minus Phil Brown. On another note, what another dreadful appointment in Hull appointing Ian Dowie as manager. Like Brian laws appointment at Burnley, Dowie will take them down. Chelsea are in decline, since they beat arsenal at home on February 7th they have lost 2, drawn 1 & won just the two in the league, not to mention their Champions League defeat over two legs to Inter Milan. Could this be anything to do with John Terry? Who cares. Despite their problems & dropping to 3rd place I think Chelsea will win this game but it won’t be as easy for them as it might have been a few months ago. An away win but I think that Chelsea are doomed to win nothing come the end of the season & Yes I also include the FA Cup in that prediction.
Result Prediction: Chelsea to win
Score prediction: Portsmouth 0 Chelsea 2
