Premiership Predictions & Correct Scores for 27th to 29th March 2010

by Doug Martin

Best Predicted result(s) of the mid-week fixtures: “Tottenham beating Fulham in the FA Cup Replay & Blackburn beating Birmingham”

I correctly predicted three out of six of the midweek fixtures. The ones I correctly predicted were Blackburn beating Birmingham, Chelsea beating Portsmouth away & the correct scorline & result in Spurs beating Fulham 3-1 in their FA Cup Quarter final replay. I was caught offside by Villa failing to beat Sunderland at home, Everton ending Manchester City’s unbeaten home run & Wolves beating West Ham easily away. Oh well.

Therefore my record was 50% for both last weekend & this midweek in terms of correct results.

This weekend could be a hard one as there are some hard fixtures to predict. Good luck & see you all for next weeks Champions League fixtures.

Match 1: Birmingham - Arsenal: (Saturday March 27th 3pm):

Birmingham lost away again on Wednesday, this time at Blackburn. This did not surprise me as I predicted this result. Despite their bad away form this year Birmingham are still doing well at home. They have drawn at home with both Chelsea & Manchester United this season & have not lost at home since September. They drew their last game at home 2-2 with Everton after being 2-0 down early in the first half. Arsenal are of course fighting for the title but I feel they won’t win it because of the referee’s. The ref’s will dictate that Manchester United will get all the decisions in the run in for the title while Chelsea & Arsenal won’t. Who says that football is bent. I will be producing an article to back up my claims at the end of the season with all the games/points that Manchester United have been given by the ref’s. Back to the game & I feel that Birmingham are due a home defeat & as arsenal are such a good run then they are the most obvious side to end Birmingham’s run at home. Mind you, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ref has a say in this game against Arsenal & therefore in Manchester United’s favour. We will see.

Result Prediction: An Arsenal win

Score Prediction: Birmingham 1 Arsenal 2

Match 2: Bolton - Manchester/refs United: (Saturday March 27th 5.30pm):

I find writing about Manchester United very hard as I am so fed up with the referees giving them points. As I have said earlier I will be doing an article to back up my claims of bias at the end of the season with all the matches that the officials have given to United. On Sunday the referee again gave Manchester the points with a dreadful penalty decision in the reds favour against Liverpool when they were losing 1-0. United should not be top, they are not playing well but the points they have been given have allowed them to climb to pole position. So far this season they have lost at Burnley, Liverpool, Chelsea, Fulham & Everton as well at home to Aston Villa. They have also been given points by Wigan & Wolves playing reserve sides against them but interestingly both these sides have not played reserve sides against either Chelsea or Arsenal. Meanwhile, Bolton have pulled clear of the relegation area & will almost certainly stay up as the bottom three are beginning to look doomed. Last time out at home Bolton beat Wigan 4-0. I have no idea if the ref will help Manchester United in this game but I can’t see them dropping any points. A big, big shame.

Result Prediction: A Manchester United win

Score Prediction: Bolton 1 Manchester United 2

Match 3: Chelsea - Aston Villa: (Saturday March 27th 3pm):

Chelsea bounced back on Wednesday by beating championship bound Portsmouth easily 3-0 away. This was a result that was predicted by myself but it was also a result that Chelsea needed after recent form. They are now second & just the 1 point behind the leaders Manchester United but are only 1 point ahead of Arsenal. Interestingly Chelsea have to play at Old Trafford in the run in. I expect Manchester United aided by the referee to win that game & as a consequence the title. I really hope I am wrong. I think that Aston Villa’s away form & more importantly their form against the top sides will allow them to grab a draw in this game. They have won at old Trafford (1-0), Liverpool (3-1) as well as beating Chelsea 2-1 at home earlier in the season. Chelsea despite winning at Portsmouth in midweek are fading & this will be proved by them dropping points in this game.

Result Prediction: A score draw

Score Prediction: Chelsea 1 Aston Villa 1

Match 4: Hull - Fulham: (Saturday March 27th 3pm):

Hull will be really fed up that they lost at Portsmouth last Saturday, especially as they were 2-1 up with a couple of minutes left. The appointment of Ian Dowie is a very sloppy & stupid appointment. He will take them down. The only good job as a manager he has done was when he was at Crystal Palace & took them into the Premiership. Since then, nothing which has included spells at Charlton & Coventry. Back to the football & I can see Hull ending their run of defeats by beating Fulham. Fulham were the first side that Hull faced in their first top flight game in their history last season. They came from behind to win 2-1. I think that because of Fulham’s away record which is not good & their defeat at Spurs on Wednesday in the cup that Fulham will lose this game even though they are obviously a better side then Hull this season. This could be Hull’s last win in the Premiership for some time, well apart from the Liverpool home game. Ha.

Result Prediction: A home win

Score Prediction: Hull 2 Fulham 1

Match 5: Spurs - Portsmouth: (Saturday March 27th 3pm):

Portsmouth came back down to earth after beating Hull on Saturday to lose 3-0 to Chelsea. The Hull victory was only their 6th victory so far this season & I can’t really see them adding any more to that total. They are now of course Championship bound after their penalty reduction due to their financial problems. I have to say what a fair system that is!!! Spurs on the same night that Portsmouth were getting beat by Chelsea were beating Fulham to book a semi final place in the FA Cup against today’s opponents Portsmouth. Spurs also had a great result against Stoke last Saturday by winning 2-1. Spurs are forth in the table & the midweek results went their way with Manchester City losing & Astron Villa only drawing at Home against Sunderland. This game is a great chance for them to cement their 4th place hopes for the end of the season. I think they will win but don’t mention that Harry Rednap helped towards Portsmouth’s financial problem’s as he is a diamond geezer. What I really mean is that he is a “Crook”….My opinion of course…

Result Prediction: Spurs to win

Score prediction: Spurs 3 Portsmouth 1

Match 6: West Ham - Stoke: (Saturday March 27th: 3pm):

West ham are in trouble as their 3-1 home defeat in midweek to Wolves proved. They have now lost 5 games on the bounce. This is a shame as they are a proper club even if like most over clubs they abuse their fan support by charging too much for admission. To say that West Ham need a win is an understatement. They are 4th from bottom & if it wasn’t for the inability of the sides below them to take advantage of their bad run then they would be in the bottom three already. They face a Stoke side who have had a good season but who will be keen to not end on it on a low note. They lost at home to Spurs on Saturday 2-1 & deservedly so. Earlier in the season West Ham were rather unlucky to lose at Stoke 2-1 & as West Ham can’t keep on losing & have to win sooner or later then I think this will be a victory for them. Might be close though.

Result Prediction: a West ham win

Score Prediction: West Ham 2 Stoke 0

Match 7: Wolves - Everton: (Saturday March 27th: 3pm):

Wolves have had three excellent away results, winning two & drawing the one & that at Aston Villa. Their latest victory came at relegation rivals West Ham on Tuesday. The 3-1 was more comprehensive then the scoreline suggests. West Ham only scored late in the game when the score was 3-0. Wolves should now stay up. Their last home game was a 0-2 defeat to Chelsea. Wolves have been ok at home this season with victories over Burnley, Bolton, Fulham & very impressive 1-0 victory against Spurs. They have also drawn with Liverpool, Hull & Aston Villa. Because of their defeats at home to the big clubs, ie, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United & Manchester City I think they will lose this game. Everton on fire in the league at present as was proved by their 2-0 away win at Manchester City on Wednesday which was City’s first home defeat of the season. Everton are now very close to spurs in 4th place. They have closed the gap to 8 points & they just might catch them to take 4th place. We will see. Wolves will be another victim for Everton I fear but it shouldn’t deter Wolves in the long run as I still think they will stay up.

Result Prediction: An Everton win

Score Prediction: Wolves 1 Everton 3

Match 8: Burnley - Blackburn: (Sunday March 28th: 12pm):

Burnley are looking doomed. They lost to a late goal at Wigan to lose yet again away. There away form is appalling. They have only won once under Brian Laws, which is what I expected when he was appointed. They now face their most deadliest rivals in Blackburn & will be looking for revenge after they lost 3-2 in the away game earlier in the season. Blackburn won again at home in midweek beating Birmingham (as I predicted). As I have said before Blackburn have been great at home but poor away. They have only won the once so far away at Bolton. They have managed a few draws but that is your lot. This is a game I think they will win as Burnley are freefall. A Shame but that is what happens when you have a board that can’t see past their own personal agenda’s, i.e., they are a bunch of tossers. An away win.

Result Prediction: An away win for Rovers

Score Prediction: Burnley 1 Blackburn 2

Match 9: Liverpool - Sunderland: (Sunday March 28th: 4pm):

Liverpool are having a crap season & personally as I have said many times before I think it is really funny. Their army of Part time supporters must be so fed up. Maybe if they went & watched them now & again they might be more pissed off. I do however feel very sorry for all the genuine Liverpool supporters from Merseyside as they are supporting their local team. Liverpool lost again on Sunday, this time at Manchester United but this defeat was different as they were beaten by United’s 12th man the referee. Now they know how Aston Villa, Arsenal & others have felt this season. Liverpool have now lost 10 times this season in the league compared to last season when they lost only twice. It seems to me that the manager’s tactics have been found out. Sunderland are one of those sides who have inflicted a defeat on Liverpool this season. Sunderland’s slump of recent months has been arrested with victories over Bolton & Birmingham & draws against Manchester City & on Wednesday a very good draw at Aston Villa. This was a good point for Sunderland considering their bad away form. They won at Bolton on the opening day of the season & since then have only managed a few draws. As Liverpool have a strong home record against the lesser lights of the Premiership I really can’t see anything other than a home win.

Result Prediction: A Liverpool win

Score Prediction: Liverpool 3 Sunderland 1

Match 9: Manchester City - Wigan: (Monday March 29th: 8pm):

City lost their unbeaten home record on Wednesday by losing 2-0 to Everton. To be honest this result was coming as City have by & large not being playing well apart from the victory at Chelsea a few weeks ago.

City seem to be a classic case of Players who are overpaid but not really giving a shit when then go out on the field of play. I personally think that the sacking of Mark Hughes is beginning to come back to haunt them as Hughes at least had the players playing for him & by & Large. Wigan got a vital 1-0 win over Burnley last time out (as I predicted) & this result will almost certainly see them staying up. Wigan have had some mixed results away this season with some heavy defeats at Portsmouth (4-0), Spurs (9-1), Manchester United & Arsenal. On the other side of the coin they managed to inflict Burnley’s first defeat of the season as well as winning at Aston Villa on the opening day of the season & also managing a very useful draw at Stoke. Despite this I think Manchester City will bounce back from the Everton defeat & win this game. Don’t think they will make 4th place come the end of the season though which could spell the end of their manager. Maybe they should appoint Mark Hughes as he is available.

Result Prediction: A Manchester City win

Score Prediction: Manchester City 3 Wigan 1

That’s all until the next weeks Champions League Games.
