Easing out to enhance Cheltenham Festival claims
Nicky Henderson's useful handicap chaser Quantitativeeasing is out for revenge on Saturday in the Spinal Research Atlantic 4 Gold Cup Chase at Cheltenham when he hopes to avenge his seven-length defeat at the hands of Great Endeavour over course and distance last month and in the process advance his claim for serious consideration for honours at the Cheltenham Festival in March, writes Elliot Slater.
The barely pronounceable JP McManus-owned gelding chased home Great Endeavour in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at the Prestbury track on November 12, staying on well in the closing stages to snatch second ahead of another course specialist Divers (re-opposes on Saturday) and is now significantly better off in the weights with the winner who has since run well to be fourth in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury but who some observers fear might just be being asked to go to the well once too often in such a short period of time.
Quantitativeeasing has reportedly come on for his first run of the term and is now a general 7/1 ante-post favourite for the feature weekend contest. A win would certainly enhance his claims and solidify his market position as 12/1 joint-favourite for the Festival Plate back at Cheltenham next March over the same course and distance at which Henderson's six-year-old ran a fine race at last season's showcase meeting to be an honourable second to Divers in the Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase. Tony McCoy is expected to be back in the saddle taking over from the injured Andrew Tinkler who partnered the horse last month, and the presence of the 16-times champion jockey is sure to ensure that the progressive performer is very much to the forefront of the mind of the betting public on Saturday afternoon.
