REVIEW OF SEASON PREDICTIONS
Review of my 2009/2010 Season tips for all 5 English Divisions
by Doug Martin
Hello everyone. This is my review of my own seasons tips that I wrote at the start of the season just gone (2009/10). I will tackle each division individually to set out more clearly how I have done.
Just a quick note regarding my cup finals preview. I correctly predicted that Fulham would lose to Atletico Madrid & by the correct scoreline as well. I also correctly predicted that Chelsea would beat Portsmouth in the Cup final which was not a particularly hard game to predict. If Frank Lampard had scored from the spot instead of missing then I would be celebrating another correct scoreline. Such is football. I await the Champions League final this Saturday with my nerves cut to pieces in the hope of a hat trick of correct cup final predictions.
Section 1:
Before I start I would like to give you the final percentages for my Correct results & Scorelines for the season in both the Premiership, FA Cup & Champions League. I will reveal my International rate when the World cup starts.
1. Premiership:
|
Premiership Games Predicted: |
Correct Results: |
Correct Scorelines: |
This gave me an average of 56.5% for the season for Premiership Correct Results:
The Correct scoreline rate works out at one correct scoreline every 11 games. This is of course a lower rate than the Result rate simply by virtue of the difficult nature of Scoreline predicting.
2. FA Cup:
|
FA Cup Games Predicted: |
Correct Results: |
Correct Scorelines: |
This Gave me an Average of 64.2% for the season for FA Cup Correct Results:
I must point out that I obviously predicted fewer games in the FA Cup & a more realistic Correct score percentage will have to be judged after next seasons FA Cup games.
3. Champions League:
|
C/L Games Predicted: |
Correct Results: |
Correct Scorelines: |
This Gave me an Average of 46% for the season for Champions League Results:
Obviously the same rule applies to the Champions League as the FA Cup in that I haven’t predicted as many games as the Premiership therefore the success rate of 46% should be judged more next season. I must point out that this seasons final between “Inter” & “Bayern Munich” has obviously not been included in the stats as it hasn’t been played at time of writing this article. I have also not included the UEFA Cup final between Fulham & Atletico Madrid as I predicted that game as a one off final only because an English team had reached the final.
Section 2:
Here is a list of the end of season positions with my predictions in brackets giving you the reader an instant comparison.
1. Premiership Review Predictions:
Champions: Chelsea - (Chelsea)
Runners Up: Manchester United - (Manchester United)
3rd: Liverpool - (Arsenal)
4th: Arsenal - (Spurs)
Relegation:
Burnley - (Burnley)
Hull City - (Hull City)
Portsmouth - (Wolves)
I did pretty well in the Premiership as I correctly predicted that Chelsea would win the Title & Manchester United would come runners up. Liverpool’s demise caught me & just about everyone else out as they could only finish 7th. Spurs were the side who took advantage of their demise. In the relegation fight I correctly predicted two out of the three that went down. The side that caught me out were Portsmouth who of course came bottom because of a points deduction brought about by appalling mismanagement. I suspect that not many people will have predicted Portsmouth’s demise either.
2. Championship Review Predictions:
Champions: Newcastle United - (WBA)
Runners up: WBA - (Sheffield United)
Play offs:
Nottingham Forest - (Derby County)
Cardiff City - (Cardiff City)
Leicester City - (Middlesbrough)
Blackpool - (Ipswich Town)
Relegation:
Sheffield Wednesday - (Barnsley)
Plymouth - (Scunthorpe)
Peterborough - (Blackpool)
A different story in the Championship. I only correctly predicted WBA to go up & of the Playoff positions I only got 1 out of 4, that being Cardiff City who are of course in the Final after beating Leicester last Week. I had a complete wipe out in the relegation places as I got none. Both Barnsley & especially Scunthorpe flirted with releagtion but unfornatitly for me they were both successful. The less said about my prediction of Blackpool being relegated the better. Good luck to them in the playoff final though.
3. League 1 Review Predictions:
Champions: Norwich City - (Leeds United)
Runners Up: Leeds United - (Millwall)
Playoffs:
Swindon Town - (Oldham)
Millwall - (Colchester United)
Huddersfield Town - (Huddersfield Town)
Charlton Athletic - (Charlton Athletic)
Relegation:
Swindon Town - (Swindon Town)
Gillingham - (Exeter City)
Wycombe - (Carlisle United)
Southend United - (Brighton)
As you can see I Improved a bit for League 1 with me correctly predicting Leeds United to go up & Charlton & Huddersfield to Make the playoffs. I came very close with my prediction of Millwall to go up as runners up but they failed on the last day of the season despite winning 3-2. The relegation places like the Championship was a right off, so I will let the above speak for itself.
League 2 Review Predictions:
Champions: Notts County - (Notts County)
Runners Up: Bournemouth - (Bournemouth)
Also promoted: Rochdale - (Rotherham United)
Playoffs:
Aldershot - (Aldershot)
Rotherham United - (Shrewsbury Town)
Dagenham & Redbridge - (Port Vale)
Morecambe - (Lincoln City)
Relegation:
Accrington Stanley - (Grimsby Town)
Morecambe - (Darlington)
Again I did better on the Promotion issues rather than relegation. I successfully predicted that Notts County & Bournemouth would both go up & if Rochdale hadn’t have had their first promotion since the rolling stones were first busted then I would have made it 3 out of 3. None the less Rotherham go into the playoffs with Aldershot who I also predicted to reach the playoffs. Again on relegation I got none. Pray that I predict your club to go down next season as they will be safe on the evidence of this seasons predictions.
5. Blue Square Conference Review Predictions:
Champions: Luton Town - (Stevenage)
Playoffs:
Oxford United (Winners) - (Oxford United Winners)
York City - (Wrexham)
Luton Town - (Cambridge United)
Rushden & Diamonds - (Stevenage)
Relegation:
Grays Athletic - (Grays Athletic)
Chester City - (Chester City)* Went bust two thirds through campaign while bottom of the table.
Forest Green - (Salisbury)
Ebbs fleet - (Eastbourne)
As you can see it was better in the conference. I came very close with my Luton prediction but they just got pipped by Stevenage & then lost to York in the playoffs. My prediction of Oxford going up through the playoffs proved correct as well. At the bottom I correctly predicted Grays Athletic demise as well as Chester’s who sadly went bust towards the end of the season. That is a story of greed & corruption that I have I’m afraid not got the time to discuss here.
Final Prediction table:
Teams Predicted for Promotion or Relegation: 44
Amount of Teams Correctly Predicted: 18
Correct Percentage Rate: 41%
That’s all for now. Hope you did well for the season.
See you all next week for the Playoff finals & England’s friendly warm up matches before the World Cup.
