Robert Thornton

The tremendously popular Robert ‘Chocolate’ Thornton has been rocked by the prediction of his specialist that the broken arm he sustained in a recent racecourse fall will take up to three months to heal, making his return to the saddle in time for the Cheltenham festival 2012 in March very much touch and go, writes Elliot Slater.
Thornton had been on board the Richard Lee-trained Western Whisky in a stayers handicap chase at Hereford on December 11 when taking a heavy fall at the seventh fence that resulted in him breaking his right arm. After waiting four days to have the arm set by a specialist in the field the stable jockey to Alan King, (one of the leading jumps trainers in the country), was stunned by the news that he could be out for three months. In a Twitter message he suggested that he intends to be back riding in six or seven weeks, but at this stage that prediction looks more than somewhat optimistic even allowing for the ebullient rider’s well know powers of recovery and he may not be ready for 2012 Cheltenham racing.
Having clocked up the 1,000th winner of his riding career at Towcester in March and gone on to end the term partnering a total of 52 winners, Thornton was already well on the way to achieving a much higher total this term having ridden 33 winners this season when he sustained his injury. Determined to be back riding at the Cheltenham Festival, a meeting at which he has enjoyed so many big race successes over the years, Thornton will hope to once again find the winners’ enclosure at the hallowed circuit as he did earlier this year when partnering Bensalem to a brave success in the Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase.
